Motivation

What3words address are a human readable alternative to longitude and latitude coordinates. Mongolia just announced that they use the system for their postal system. That makes it useful data to store in Wikidata.

So we need either a combination multilingual text and external identifier datatype or one identifier per language. My preference is for the former if it is technically possible (@Lydia Pintscher (WMDE):?) but the latter if it is not (this proposal being for a "what3words address (English)" property). I am not sure how a combination of multilingual text and external identifier would look like in practice. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 18:48, 26 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Based on Lydia's comments I support this as "what3words English address". Thryduulf (talk) 15:26, 16 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  •   Oppose These values do not equate to an address, or a building, but to a particular 3m×3m square. Some items will cover the areas referenced by many W3W codes, and some W3W codes will overlap two or more items. •   Comment This could be a new way to input P625 (and output). Besides maybe it's needed in sparsely populated Great Britain, where people generally don't have street addresses, P969 wont be of much use and people discovered this to use this as a substitute.

  •   Oppose this is a new proprietary system; the company already abandoned one previous (one-word) version. This seems like a fad and adding it to wikidata is just supporting a corporate endeavor with no useful long-term purpose. ArthurPSmith (talk) 18:53, 30 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  •   Comment if it's language dependent, shouldn't it be "monolingual string"? If the main use is for a sparsely populate country (where P969 isn't available), the samples should probably illustrate that. We might even exclude items that have P969.

    • If monolingual text can have a formatter URL that links to either the w3w map or converts it to coordinates for the standard geohack stuff then that would be ideal. Lydia's comments above suggest this is not possible though. I don't think there is any need to exclude those with P969 (P969) as it's intended to be an alternative to it. Thryduulf (talk) 13:16, 17 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
      • I think she comments on (the non-existant datatype) multilingual text and external identifiers, not monolingual text or string. String properties rely on the gadget. Monolingual text would have to do the same. In any case, I think you'd have to specify the language of the words. Personally, I don't think it would be useful for Royal Albert Hall (Q193639) and I don't see an advantage of including more than 1 language by default. Obviously, I see as a property that can be of use if there is no P969.

  •   Support good alternative to numeric coordinates. Even though the system is new, it's already quite established. --Pasleim (talk) 19:06, 17 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  •   Oppose - I'm not convinced W3W is actually a good idea. It's a closed proprietary system run by an organisation with no clear business model, which could vanish tomorrow. I'm uncomfortable with Wikidata using it when we have perfectly functional addressing systems (P969 (P969)). Andrew Gray (talk) 19:56, 18 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
    • P969 (P969) isn't a perfectly functional system at all. In many developing countries, as well as in some emerging economies, the majority of people do not have an address. [1] Some authorities like the Mongolian Post or the Swiss mapping agency are also using W3W.
      • I think I got sidetracked in another tab and forgot to finish my comment, sorry :-). I agree that not everywhere has a functioning address system. What I was meaning to say is that if we have a case where this is essential and there's no other system available, P969 (P969) can work for W3W - we could just put the text string in there and add a qualifier to indicate it's a W3W address, or whatever other system someone comes up with. • Given multiple oppose votes and a stalled process I withdraw the property proposal. ChristianKl (talk) 11:19, 1 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
    • Well it slept for two months as it wasn't included in any of the proposal pages. I think it has its merits, but Q9202 and Q193639 might not be good use cases.
