An editor has requested the community to provide input on "New badge for Featured texts" via the Requests for comment (RFC) process. This is the discussion page regarding the issue.

Right now we have badges for featured article badge (Q17437796), featured list badge (Q17506997), and featured portal badge (Q17580674). Wikisource, however, has Featured texts. Can we add a new badge for that? Alternatively, we could combine the 3 existing badges into just "Featured", and re-use that. Kaldari (talk) 18:24, 15 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

What is your rationale for creating a new badge instead of using featured article badge (Q17437796) for featured texts as-is, which I understand is the status quo? Beleg Tâl (talk) 19:40, 15 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Also it is worth mentioning, that enWS does not use featured lists or featured portals, but we have featured portals as "featured texts" in the past—namely s:Portal:Romanes Lecture i.e. Romanes Lecture (Q7362459). Also, it is worth mentioning that Portal space on enWS is not always used in the same way as Portal space on Wikipedia, and portals on enWS will not always be instances of Wikimedia portal (Q4663903) (nor should they be). On the other hand, I do not know whether merging the three badges will impact other wikis where the concepts are distinct. Beleg Tâl (talk) 19:45, 15 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Beleg Tâl: My rationale are:
  1. Featured texts are a different thing than featured articles, and it would never occur to me to mark a featured text as a "featured article".
  2. If we use the same badge for both, it won't be possible to programmatically identify Wikisource badges (unless we do something awkward like declare featured article badge (Q17437796) as a subclass of both Wikimedia badge (Q17442550) and it's child, Wikisource badge (Q75042035)).
  3. The "topic's main category" property of the badge is not going to match our "Category:Featured texts". Thus, automatically assigning the category via the Wikidata badge will be more difficult (or will just have to be hard-coded). (See wikisource:Module:Edition for an example of how this could work.)
