Supported by

The project Testi latini (Latin texts) is a pilot project from Wikimedia Italia with the support also of Wikimedia Switzerland to improve the metadata of items related to Latin languages, mainly authors, works and epigraphs.

The project will probably evolve in different phases, and is organized in two main sectors.

The first phase is from July to October 2020. The first coordinator is Epìdosis.

User:Alexmar983 is performing the task as User:Alessandro Marchetti (WMIT)

Procedure edit

Practical details edit

Authors edit

  • Skip expressions like Dominicus Sanctus, use Sanctus Dominicus
  • Put always all bibliographic data from sources
  • Skip VIAF or CERL as sources, maybe FAST. They aggregate or replicate sources, they do not create ones.
  • In case of old author use ethnic group (P172) and not citizenship
  • All incertus are considered in the first phase N/A. Let's wait for a precise discussion about their use. Probably a clear qualifier for the ID.
  • Items with double authors will never be managed

main issue even if we can agree on Roman numerals for the codes, the filler 0s used in the names on Commons are random, this will require an extensive process of discussion to be set up. It was studied and analyzed but it cannot be done unless we risk to have to change it again.

Details for database managers edit

  • this is currently N/A but could be splitted
  • standardization of "000" code instead of "001" for ID of specific works should be also available in MQDQ. Revise all fragmenta
  • [20] incertus? [21] N/A site to be informed
  • [22] genitivo strano N/A
  • Primo Cenomanensis N/A site to be informed
  • [23] the VIAF is wrong, other wikidata item with similar name
  • Paulus Sergius (non solo Sergio il Grammatico) Manfredus and Benedictus N/A, mixtures
  • some names of PHI are too generic even if specific see [24] or [25], why so? We used them but it would be better to refine them.
  • this is a weird way to encode a specific characters. Is the "1" a typo?

Author edit

  1. pseudo (ps): how to manage these items. pseudo-author (Q92306274), if the standard used in Commentariolum Petitionis (Q466613) is also interesting to be adopted as well.
  2. Incertus: how to manage these items.
  3. cases such as Giannatonio vs Giovanni Antonio, how to handle queries
  4. verify the presence of VIAF ID (P214), GND ID (P227) and Library of Congress authority ID (P244)
  5. standardize abbreviation
  6. double IDs such as [26]
  7. Author is correct for official document and inscription of kings?
  8. Insert "copyright status as a creator" such as in Bertechramnus (Q1132947)
  9. Insert diocese information for bishops
  10. cases such as Dancus (Q102878151) and Dancus (Q103930873), more general than "incertus" and "pseudus"
  11. so far we tried to clean up all dates of birth and deaths but not all of them, an organic review must be done. it's about different surces that are contradicting but should be included.
  12. discuss the possible use of subject has role (P2868) to indicate as a qualifiers ID related to authorities who are not clearly the factual author of the texts (e.g. bureacratic or legal documents); signature for validation is not authorship.
  13. Decide currently N/A entries of plural authors suchs as monachi (insitutions? religious orders?)
  14. Check all topics of imported scientific articles about the works--Alessandro Marchetti (WMIT) (talk) 14:38, 24 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Works edit

  1. fragmenta: not possible to be managed without accurate discussion of the whole community. This will require much more hour and a definition of the architecture in order to link them to the modern edition. All items of modern editions are another task. It was told that the main topic was the whole opera used at school, so only fragmenta of well-defined opera will be linked.
  2. it should be discussed how to insert text of fragaments, same Pds of epigraphs?
  3. miscellanea and standardized collection of anynomous authors are also linked to modern edition of collection and should similarly be created later.
  4. Carmen ad Varchium is an example of a work interpreted by different author: how to decline it?
  5. encode which IDs are linked to fragment, information about fragmented opera, esempio temporaneo De Agri Cultura (Q1180565)
  6. alternate ending (Q4736392) is an example of alternative ending, item on the long term should be considered as the general concept, subitems maybe to be created, include also WS standardization. To be discussed in the future.
  7. how to encode the number of libri or subdvision of a work such as Factorum ac dictorum memorabilium libri IX (Q3738259).
  8. Some N/A of MQDQ even if miscellaneous provide a specific "00X" link to every fragment, they should be used for specific link to item of such fragments. Examples: [27]
  9. Dicuss in MDQD the code "?codice=" replacing "/codice/" in the link to specific portion of the text.
  10. Improve the usage of cites work (P2860)

Epigraphs and writings edit

  1. style of links to Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum to be discussed in the following part of the project
  2. Databases: Ubi-erat-lupa, ohiolink.edu and Heidelberg inschrift
  3. Epigraphik-Datenbank Clauss / Slaby
  4. inscription is different than object, for example c:Category:Stele of Cantius and inscription should be split, similarly roman milestone in Offenburg (Q102601302)
  5. collection (P195) requires a qualifier fo a place, some "collections" are however not physical but on-line archive, what can we do?
