Wikidata:WikiProject Numismatics
The aim of the WikiProject Numismatics is:
- to define a set of properties that can be used to describe coins and banknotes in Wikidata:
- this applies to coin and banknote types, such as Eisenhower dollar (Q1312952) or denarius of L. Censorinus (Q5256588);
- in some cases, this may apply to individual notable coins and banknotes, such as the tribute penny (Q7840538);
- to map and import all relevant data that currently is spread in Commons, Wikipedia, and Wikisource.
- to establish methods to interact with this data from external projects, e.g., projects describing coin and banknote collections.
This entire page has to be updated following Wikidata:Project chat/Archive/2017/10#Describing the two sides of a coin discussion.
- If you want to create a new coin type item (class of coins), you can use: https://tools.wmflabs.org/wikidata-todo/cradle/#/subject/coin_type_(numismatics)
- If you want to add a new coin item (specimen), you can use: https://tools.wmflabs.org/wikidata-todo/cradle/#/subject/coin_specimen_(numismatics)
- If you want to add a new coin hoard, you can use: https://tools.wmflabs.org/wikidata-todo/cradle/#/subject/coin_hoard_(numismatics)

Getting started Edit
If you can't spend much time describing a new coin type, it may be a good idea to start with described by source (P1343) associated with a coin catalog (Q52666561), with appropiate qualifiers, including object named as (P1932) so that other people can model the structured data, and subject named as (P1810).
Title | ID | Data type | Description | Examples | Inverse |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
described by source | P1343 | Item | source of information: work where this item is described | Vladimir K. Zworykin <described by source> Brockhaus Enzyklopädie (19 ed.) | - |
object named as | P1932 | String | use as qualifier to indicate how the object's value was given in the source | Before the embers <object named as> Léon Grandet | - |
subject named as | P1810 | String | name: name by which a subject is recorded in a database, mentioned as a contributor of a work, or is referred to in a particular context | Broncho Billy Anderson <subject named as> Gilbert M. 'Broncho Billy' Anderson | - |

Individual coins Edit
There are several instances of coins in Wikidata. Some are really instances and not sub-classes, e.g., those of the Museum of Toulouse:
You can find them (and a lot of mistakenly classified coin types) using the following query
#Individual coins (instances)
SELECT ?item ?itemLabel ?itemAltLabel ?itemDescription
WHERE
{
?item wdt:P279*/wdt:P31 wd:Q41207.
SERVICE wikibase:label { bd:serviceParam wikibase:language "[AUTO_LANGUAGE],en,it,fr,es,de,ru,hu". }
}
And you can find coin types (classes and sub-classes) using the following query
#sub-classes of the coin class
SELECT ?item ?itemLabel ?itemAltLabel ?itemDescription
WHERE
{
?item wdt:P279/wdt:P279* wd:Q41207.
