Wikidata has a huge data gap on Indian scientists and researchers, working on different fields of science. This datathon is intended to fill the data gap as much as possible. Considering the current COVID-19 pandemic (Q81068910) situation, scientists working on COVID-19 (Q84263196) will be a priority topic (sample queries for relevant publications and relevant author name strings).

  • Topic: Indian scientists
  • Start time: 22 May 2020, 00:00:01 IST
  • End time: 24 May 2020, 23:59:59 IST

Goals edit

  • Create and improve items about different Indian scientists.
  • Link the authors with their scholarly articles.

Tasks edit

The tasks related to this datathon are not fixed. Participants can choose their own preferred tasks on this topic, build and enlist queries below and work on those. However, a list of tasks is provided below already, which might interest you.

Medicine edit

Create and enrich items of scientists for any given university or research institute
  • for example, scientists who are employed at National Institute of Virology (Q6973748) (Scholia profile/ curation page, related changes).
    • This query returns existing items for scientists employed there. (In particular, any item which has the statement "employer (P108) National Institute of Virology (Q6973748)" will show up in the query.)
    • You of course can add items to this list as well; if a scientist working for the National Institute of Virology (Q6973748) has a Wikidata item, you can add the statement above, or if the scientist does not—and please try searching first!—you can create an item for that person.
      • Make sure that said item for that person has instance of (P31) human (Q5) and other properties as appropriate for items about people. (See the existing items returned in the query for examples of such properties.)
    • If an item is returned in the query, but some of the columns are empty, then they may be filled in as follows:
      • If the "employer_source" column is empty, then add a reference to the statement "employer (P108) National Institute of Virology (Q6973748)" on the item in question using either stated in (P248) (if said reference has a Wikidata item) or reference URL (P854) (if said reference lacks a Wikidata item and a URL to the reference on the Internet is available).
        • Do not use Wikipedia or any other Wikimedia project as a reference here!
      • If the "educatedLabel" column is empty, then add a statement using educated at (P69) with an institution at which the scientist was educated.
      • If the "educated_source" column is empty, then add a reference to the statement you added for the "educatedLabel" column in a similar fashion to that described for the "employer_source" column above.
    • An item will only be eligible for consideration as being "improved" in this respect only after all columns have been filled for that item in the query.
COVID-19

Awards edit

Geography edit

  • (related) Geographically refine (if possible) the topics of India-related scientific articles.
    • This query returns a sample of scientific articles with main subject (P921) India (Q668). Often, many of the titles describe places smaller than the entire country of India as a whole! These places usually can and should be added as main subject (P921) values.
      • If, in fact, the topic can be refined to a smaller place (for instance, "Kolkata" instead of "India" when the title mentions "Kolkata, West Bengal, India"), then you can replace main subject (P921) India (Q668) with the appropriate place. (If the item happens to also have a smaller place for main subject (P921), then keep the smallest of the places possible--e.g. if its title mentions "Kolkata, West Bengal, India" and has both main subject (P921) India (Q668) and main subject (P921) West Bengal (Q1356), then you can delete both and add main subject (P921) Kolkata (Q1348).)
        • If you decide to have a look at this task, do not remove other main subject (P921) values besides India (Q668) if they happen to be present!
        • Do not add higher-level entities where lower-level entities suffice—e.g. do not add "Mumbai" and "Maharashtra" just because the title mentions "Mumbai, Maharashtra, India"; simply adding "Mumbai" usually suffices, unless the publication is about several of the administrative levels.
    • This bubble chart shows the relative number of scientific articles whose main subject (P921) is a place within India (but not India itself!).
    • You need not work entirely off the query given in the first sub-bullet point; if you do a freeform search on Wikidata for some place (example) and you happen upon some articles that could use main subject (P921) (that place), go ahead and add it!
