Wikidata:WikiProject LD4 Wikidata Affinity Group

 Welcome Events Affinity Group Coordination

LD4 ("Linked Data For [...]") is a group of related projects "for linked data practitioners to foster broad adoption and sustained support of linked data efforts in libraries".[1]

Rationale

edit

Community discussion of Wikidata related topics with the goal of understanding how the library can contribute to and leverage Wikidata as a platform for publishing, linking, and enriching library linked data.

The group will meet biweekly to discuss and work on a Wikidata project for approximately four sessions. Meetings will focus on the project and tools used to add or edit data, and attendees will receive hands-on experience using the tools discussed while contributing to the project.

Anyone is welcome to join the group as a presenter, attendee, or coordinator!

Approach

edit

From 2019 through August 2024 the group hosted biweekly calls and working hours for Wikidata and monthly calls for Wikibase/WBStack. Calls were recorded. From August 2024 on the group has adopted a project based approach where presenters discuss a Wikidata project and attendees receive hands-on experience editing, creating, and contributing to the project goals.

You can find public agendas with recordings and notes in Google Drive.

Coordination

edit

As of September 2021, all call/working hour participants are welcome to participate in group activity coordination.

Join us on #wikidata-coord on Slack to get involved! You do not need prior experience with Wikidata or group coordination to join in, and it is a very collaborative group.

See our Volunteer opportunities!

The group meets biweekly to discuss and contribute to various Wikidata projects. At the first meeting for a project, the presenter will discuss their project and demonstrate tools used (this meeting will be recorded). For about three following sessions attendees will use the tools presented and contribute to the project. This took the place of the Affinity Group Calls and Working Hours, and while it is the "template" we welcome different ideas or projects. The only requirement is that it somehow be related to Wikidata, but collaborative projects with other platforms are also welcome. Those with any level of experience are encouraged to attend and questions are welcome!

Calls were discontinued in August 2024 but past notes and agendas with links to recordings can be found via the page linked above. Most sessions were recorded.

Goals and Outcomes

edit
  • Provide a welcoming, collaborative, and supportive space to discuss Wikidata related topics
  • Gain a basic understanding of Wikidata in the context of the Wiki community and its norms
  • Help other institutions begin to work in Wikidata by developing a Wiki* inventory of competencies and technologies necessary for those working with library and archival metadata to build a skill set that can be used in Wikidata and other linked data work
  • Discuss and document what types of communication channels are available and what community support and open source tools are needed to implement integration of library and archival metadata with Wikidata at scale across a broad spectrum of libraries and archives
  • Invite and encourage a variety of institutions and projects, including, public libraries, archives, and community projects, to participate in the group to ensure different perspectives are shared and needs identified
  • Document and share work with the Wikidata community where it will be open to reuse and feedback
  • Gain an understanding of processes to get data out of Wikidata via data dumps and APIs to reuse in library applications as well as the processes to donate data to contribute library and archival data back to Wikidata
