Describing film directors, producers, screenwriters, and othersEdit
Before you begin, please familiarize yourself with Wikidata's guidelines concerning description of living people and err on the side of respecting privacy.
If the following properties are missing from an item, please add them for any person whose works are held by the Harvard Film Archive:
Essential propertiesEdit
Here's an example of an item that uses the following properties and references HOLLIS and other sources: Karen Aqua
Property | Value | Usage note | Requires reference? |
---|---|---|---|
instance of (P31) | human (Q5) | This is required by Wikidata, and should be the first statement that you add to a new item. | no |
occupation (P106) | film director (Q2526255), film producer (Q3282637), screenwriter (Q28389), or other values as appropriate | A person can have multiple occupations. It's best to add this (and instance of (P31)) before adding any other statements. | yes (you can use a HOLLIS record as a reference URL (P854)) |
has works in the collection (P6379) | Harvard Film Archive (Q14715515) | This applies to anyone who contributed to work that's in the HFA collection. If the Harvard Film Archive's collections page includes a collection named for them, use archives at (P485) to create an additional statement. | yes (you can use a HOLLIS record as a reference URL (P854)) |
on focus list of Wikimedia project (P5008) | Harvard Film Archive Project (Q111249030) | This exists for tracking purposes. It's basically administrative metadata that indicates that the item was created or edited as part of our project, which gives us the ability to create lists and reports. | no |
at least one identifier property (see table below for specific properties) | (see table below for lookups) | Add at least one identifier, if available. These are helpful for disambiguation, especially when there are very few other statements about an item, and may also help to establish the item's notability. The table below contains a non-exhaustive list of likely identifiers and their lookups. | no |
IdentifiersEdit
Property | Value | Usage note | Requires reference? |
---|---|---|---|
BFI Films, TV and people ID (P4438) | Use Google to search name followed by site:https://www2.bfi.org.uk/films-tv-people/
(because BFI Filmography lookup is currently not returning results for a number of films and people with known BFI IDs) |
no | |
ISNI (P213) | ISNI (International Standard Name Identifier) lookup | A previous Harvard Library project generated ISNIs for large proportion of HFA filmmakers, so this may be your best bet | no |
Library of Congress authority ID (P244) | Library of Congress Name Authority File lookup | no | |
Union List of Artist Names ID (P245) | Getty ULAN (Union List of Artist Names) lookup | no |
If you are an experienced Wikidata editor creating many items manually, you may want to use the Film director Cradle form. (Despite the name, you can use this for producers, screenwriters, actors, composers, and other roles!) Make sure to log in first, and make sure you enter language (for label, alias, and so forth) as a two-character language code! A "create new item" button will appear at the bottom of the form after mandatory fields are filled in. References will need to be added to each new item after form submission.
Optional propertiesEdit
While entirely optional, consider using the following properties as applicable.
Please familiarize yourself with Wikidata's guidelines concerning description of living people and err on the side of respecting privacy.
The column header Value may be new entity? means "Might I need to create another Wikidata item to use this property, or should all the items I'd need to refer to exist already?" For example, for values for country of citizenship (P27) should be existing countries (unless there's a screenwriter who's founded an obscure new micronation), so it's marked as "no". Whereas employer (P108) might need to point to an organization that isn't yet represented in Wikidata; hence, "yes".
Property | Value | Value may be new entity? | Usage note |
