Wikidata:Multilingualism Help Wikidata Multilingualism WikiProject: Overall Stats Best Practices

This WikiProject organizes work around achieving 100% Wikidata multilingualism for every language with MediaWiki internationalization support. It is initiated, developed & supported by Wikimedia Language Diversity community volunteers.

Rationale

edit

We want our tacit knowledge rich living language diversity heritage to be influencing each and every process in the world through Linked data

We want our languages to serving on Wikimedia platforms, on all Wikibase installations & beyond

Making all forms of knowledge accessible to all humans in whatever language they feel most comfortable with, expressed in Wikimedia Vision & Wikipedia Purpose, are applicable and have even greater sense to Wikidata & wider Web via its architecture.

Languages & the tacit cultural knowledge ingrained therein are part of the intangible cultural heritage, even if not explicitly stated in the   Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, adopted at 2003 UNESCO General Conference.

Statistical research on the sounds of speech prevalent in various languages, their frequency and different combinations demonstrates that every language is a worldview prism, shaped by multi-generational cultural experiences of its speakers' community, as well as a communication protocol carrying their tacit knowledge:

Based on the results of our research we can now confidently state that all humans, even aborigines of the yet unnamed islands, have the [sub/un/conscious] knowledge of everything about the world, its structure, interactions within, as well as contents of awe-inspiring phenomena in the field of physics, mathematics, etc., because they were able to create own language. ... By creating own language they have proved own greatness. ... our planes, atomic bombs, computers – all these achievement turn out to be nothing in comparison with the greatness of any human language, as it already contains everything from the evolving world.[1]

How do we get there?

edit

Imagine you can use Amharic, Inuktitut, Konkani, Sinhala, Pukapukan, Punjabi, Tamazight or whatever other language you love for everything every second. Wikidata, Lexicographical data & Wikifunctions have the potential to make that a reality.
  1. Developing lists of stats collection dashboards & queries on the state of all of the MediaWiki supported languages' use in Wikidata covering
    1. Language-domain Wikipedia & other Wikimedia project language editions
    2. Incubator-based language editions of WM projects: active & all
    3. All other MediaWiki supported language codes
  2. Annually updating the above & issuing an overview report on the state of the Wikidata Multilingualism
  3. Aggregating, documenting and showcasing Wikidata Multiligualism best practices across the language-volunteers communities and wider Wikimedia stakeholders

Ways to support

edit
  • Content: Localizing properties & items, labels & descriptions into the language/s you know
  • Content: Learning about lexicographical data & adding them for the above
  • Administrative: Helping to update the stats pages, prepare and present the report; collect, document & showcase best practices
  • Outreach: Promoting wider use of MediaWiki software & Wikidata database Multilingual resources
