Wikidata:WikiProject PCC EMCO Wikidata CoP

Background

The Program for Cooperative Cataloging (Q63468537) (PCC) has launched a global cooperative for entity management on the semantic web called EMCO. As part of this program, the Wikidata user community has set up a Community of Practice to coordinate identity management work for GLAMs. You can read more about EMCO and the Wikidata Community of Practice at the EMCO Lyrasis Wiki.

This project is an extension of the work of the WikiProject PCC Wikidata Pilot (Q102157715) and acknowledges its great intellectual and organizational debt to the LD4 Wikidata Affinity Group (Q124692294).

Early Adopter Phase Objectives

Objectives, as identified by project participants, Registry Coordinators, and the PCC Identity Management Advisory Committee, include:

Defining shared core properties for "agent" classes in Wikidata
Determining a method of collecting and reporting Wikidata statistics to the PCC
Pulling together documentation on Wikidata editing relevant to GLAMs
Coordinating WikiProjects participants are working on
Setting expectations for participation in the EMCO Wikidata Community of Practice moving forward

Mission

EMCO promotes the discovery and use of the world’s knowledge by supporting metadata producers in library and other cultural heritage communities and by forging alliances with partners who share common goals. PCC members create trusted metadata and support its use and reuse by global communities

PCC Identity Management Advisory Committee

The EMCO Wikidata Community of Practice will have oversight from the Identity Management Advisory Committee. The Advisory Committee has been exploring the use of Wikidata to realize the PCC’s 2023-2027 Strategic Direction 2.2: "Continue to build a community of practice that supports identity/entity management workflows alongside traditional MARC-based authority control", "Encourage and facilitate widespread use of URIs in MARC authority records for persons, organizations, places, works and other entities, as well as in MARC bibliographic records ... Encourage broader PCC member participation in ISNI, Wikidata and similar emerging Linked Data-based ventures, as activities that form a part of a holistic, reimagined standard cataloging workflow ... Create an identity management PCC program that functions in parallel with the Name Authority (NACO) and Subject Authority (SACO) programs; recruit for and promote this program broadly".
