Wikidata:WikiProject PCC Wikidata Pilot/San Diego State University/Comic Arts Project Workflows

The Comic Arts Project has three projected workflows for Wikidata.

For traditionally cataloged materials in our Comic Arts Collection, we plan on using Mix'n'Match. As of November 2020, the goal is to upload three separate catalogs to Mix'n'Match for publishers (found in the MARC 260 or 264 fields), main authors (found in the MARC 100 or 110 fields), and other contributors (found in the MARC 700 and 710 fields). We are still determining whether we want to handle fictitious characters through Mix'n'Match or not.

SDSU currently has a subscription to the Alexander Street Press Underground and Independent Comics, Comix, and Graphic Novels: Volume I. This collection includes full online access to approximately 360 titles (as of November 2020). Since this is a smaller collection and the information in OCLC is at times minimal, the project lead thought using OpenRefine's Wikidata Reconciliation would be a good option. The workflow for these titles will include updates to both Wikidata and OCLC (since the catalogers have access to the materials online).

Spreadsheets/Google Sheets

edit

SDSU currently catalogs its single issue comics separately from the rest of the collection. The data is easy to download to a spreadsheet and will likely be the last collection looked at for the pilot project.

NARs

edit

While working on creating items in Wikidata, we will also be creating/revising Name Authority Records. This workflow requires following all NACO guidelines. As of December 2020, the project will focus on updating undifferentiated NARs, improving minimal records, and creating new Name Authority Records.

For Name Authority Records, follow the best practices for the 024 field. For example: 024 7# Q550288 $2 wikidata $1 http://www.wikidata.org/entity/Q550288.

Workflow for name authority records:

  • If a full record exists (and the information is accurate), do not update it just to add in the Wikidata Q#.
  • If a record exists but is minimal, the cataloger can update it if they believe it will be useful. If you're updating the record, make sure to also add the Wikidata Q# and a 667 note stating: Record created as part of PCC Wikidata Pilot. Please do not edit or remove the Wikidata information.
  • Follow NACO training when updating records. Also think critically about what information is necessary to include on a name authority.
  • If a record does not exist, create one. It is up to the project participants whether they want to create a full or minimal level record following LC guidelines.
  • For fictitious characters, project lead asks all records be full level (it might be confusing otherwise since some characters have the same name across franchises, i.e. Nightwing (in Batman and Superman).

Note that when citing Wikidata, you use the URI not the URL. Here is the information for formatting the URI (taken from Formatting and Obtaining URIs):

To formulate URI: append the identifier (found in parentheses adjacent to the entity label) to http: //www.wikidata.org/entity (The URI should not be copied from the browser address bar, because that is an information resource address rather than the URI for the real world object. On the left hand column, right click on “Concept URI” and copy the link location to get the RWO URI.)
