This WikiProject is for work done at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (Q2302311) to create and enhance Wikidata items with information from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Libraries. Special Collections and Archives. This project was started in July 2020 and is ongoing.

Aim and Scope Edit

The aim of this project is to further explore ways to incorporate the Linked Data Principles, with metadata design and practice happening in special collections, archives, and rare book libraries. The goal is to increase machine and human discoverability of underrepresented concepts/entities archived at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Libraries.

Scope

  • Promote understanding of use of Wikibase and Wikidata in special collections, archives, and rare book libraries
  • Develop local expertise in Wikidata editing, and explore issues such as Wikidata governance, data persistence, data modeling, identity management and development
  • Extend the global knowledge graph by connecting unique entities from UNLV's Special Collections to entities in Wikidata
  • Discover, create, and test Wikidata workflows for reuse
  • Help develop Wikidata best practices which intersects digital libraries, digital humanities, special collections, archives, and rare book libraries

Digital Collections Wikimedian-in-Residence Pilot Edit

Project Description:

Multiple communities have embraced Wikipedia and Wikibase as a public, global source of information. This pilot will provide an opportunity to add value to and further expose special collections materials on the Semantic Web as library linked data.

As a widely used source of structured data, Wikidata/Wikibase offers a platform to publish, link, and enrich special collection’s metadata. The Wikimedian-in-Residence will report to the Special Collections Metadata Librarian and will play a key role in enabling the Wikimedia community, the digital library community, and the special collections community to enrich each other’s knowledgebase.

During the duration of the pilot, production shall be carried out in sprints. Each sprint will have a theme assigned, from the archives collecting strengths.

Timeline Edit

  • 2014/2018
    • Began UNLV Linked Data Study Group and experiments into transforming digital collections metadata into linked open data using Open Refine, automated reconciliation services for controlled vocabularies, management of CV in Tematres server, and developed Virtuoso triplestore. Built Navigator pilot project; a tool to explore people, corporate bodies, digital objects and archival collections via a linked data visualization. Worked on cleaning metadata with focus on assigning URIs for controlled vocabularies and normalizing data.

    • Began migration from CONTENTdm to Fedora-based repository and Islandora Version 8 for digital asset management
  • 2018/2019
    • Began to incorporate Wikidata Q-numbers in addition to internal and external URIs in Tema Tres Controlled Vocabulary server using a skos:closeMatch

Use Cases Edit

The use cases pursued by this project include:

  • Identify high demand collections that are underrepresented on the Semantic Web and create Wikidata collection level records
  • Identify people or organizations in our repository that are not represented in VIAF, LCNAF, or does not have a DBpedia URI and create a Wikidata records

Project Metrics Edit

The Programs and Events Dashboard will be used to gather statistics for the UNLV Special Collections Wikidata Enhancement Project. The statistics for this pilot are tracked with this campaign.

Sprints Edit

Production will be carried out in thematic sprints prioritized in consultation with UNLV Special Collection curators.

Sprint 1: Mines of Southern Nevada Edit

Content for this project comes from existing metadata for Nevada mining history found in the Boomtown collection, Historic Landscape and/or the Photo collections. The Boomtown grant project created a collection of material about mining in Nevada between 1900-1925. The digital collection contains mining maps, mine names, and geographic information related to mines and mining. This sprint will explore the creation of collection-level records in batch and referencing those collections, creating links to existing mine and/or mining concepts in Wikidata using the archives at property.

Sprint 2: Historic Westside Legacy Park Edit

The second sprint will focus on the Historic Westside Legacy Park, currently under construction and expected to open in late 2021. This will involve the creation of a new Cradle form for awards, bringing together frequently used properties applied to honors, awards, and titles. After the item for the award is created using this new Cradle, additional items will be added to provide context, including those for each of the 36 people honored in 2021, the politicians who created the award, the park itself, the artist for artworks within the park, and any other relevant entities. Research within ArchivesSpace will provide opportunities to link entities to UNLV collections such as oral histories featuring the honorees.

Sprint 3: Historic Nevada newspapers Edit

The third sprint will involve creating Wikidata items to reflect work done through the Nevada Digital Newspaper Project (NVDNP), an extension of the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP). The project provided funding for permanent access to digitized versions of historic newspapers published between 1789 and 1963. A new Cradle form for newspapers will be created and used to add selected newspapers from the NVDNP project. This sprint will include investigating the rich information generated through the NVDNP and exploring which Wikidata properties might best reflect that information.

Sprint 4: Westside businesses Edit

Sprint 4 will continue the second sprint's work focusing on the West Las Vegas neighborhood. In collaboration with Claytee D. White, director of the Oral History Research Center, research about restaurants, nightclubs, casinos, churches, and other institutions will be used to create and enhance Wikidata items. Historic sites will be mapped to give a fuller picture of the rich culture of the Westside in the 1950s and 1960s. Additional entities such as business owners, notable residents, and nonprofit organizations will demonstrate the interconnectedness of the community at its peak.

Sprint 5: Nevada Women's History Project biographies Edit

The Nevada Women's History Project was started through the efforts of State Senator Jean Ford and highlights information about significant women in Nevada's history. This sprint will populate Wikidata items for all women profiled in the project. A new Wikipedia property value will be proposed (Nevada Women's History Project ID) and added to each Wikidata item.

Sprint 6: Bob Paluzzi Panoramic Photographs collection Edit

The Bob Paluzzi Panoramic Photographs collection is comprised of hundreds of prints and negatives. This sprint will involve creating Wikidata items for some of the digitized photographs in the collection through QuickStatements, exploring which properties are most important to include in items for photographs.

Sprint 7: Local Names Integration Workflow Edit

This sprint investigates the creation or addition to Wikidata for notable local personal and corporate names and the integration of their persistent identifiers (i.e. Q-numbers) into local metadata workflows and knowledge graphs.

Sprint 11: Archival LGBTQ+ Collections Edit

This sprint connects notable persons and corporate entities found in the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Special Collections and Archives collections regarding the LGBTQIA+ community. Entities such as nonprofit organizations, businesses, business owners, notable persons, events, and legislation will highlight the interconnectedness of the community. Using SPARQL we will be able to create map visualizations, timeline views, and social graphs.

Querying multiple SPARQL endpoints for enhanced results (*for items both in Wikidata and Wikipedia) Edit

  • This query uses the Wikidata Query Service and the DBpedia endpoint to produce a known-person search using a VIAF identifier in conjunction with an English rdfs:label to produce a result that merges a Wikidata item with additional information such as optional hyperlinks to an image in Wikimedia Commons, and DBpedia abstracts.
