Issues to think about, for preparing to work on Administrative subdivisions of England
Questions edit
Countries edit
- What about (non-place) things that specifically apply only to England, or only to England and Wales, as opposed to the whole UK ?
- eg: laws, sporting competitions, associations, ...
- laws: use applies to jurisdiction (P1001)
- eg: laws, sporting competitions, associations, ...
Regions edit
- Should these be included in the P131 hierarchy ?
- For -- useful hierarchical division with clean hierarchy, used by statistical agencies, inclusion makes regions easy to query by
- Against -- is much administration being done at this level, if P131 is meant to indicate formal administrative structures ?
Counties edit
- Should these be included in the P131 hierarchy ?
- Against: Can break clean hierarchy, both downwards and upwards
- For: Often the strongest form of geographical identification; very likely to be added; and should be queryable
- How to deal with "county council areas" that are smaller than ceremonial counties ?
- How to link to "county council" items ?
- forward: legislative body (P194) / back: applies to jurisdiction (P1001) ?
- How to deal with "historic" counties -- eg Sussex, Cheshire -- and counties where the historic counties were much larger, eg Lancashire, that people still identify with ?
- and historic divisions such as 'wapentakes' -- is it okay to use P131 between purely historical items ?
- is it appropriate to use P131 to locate historical items within current items (eg Westmorland within Cumbria?) Or does this (i) represent a historical anachronism; (ii) make it harder to query for current administrative divisions ?
Civil parishes edit
- Should these be included at the lowest level of the P131 hierarchy? Or should we prefer wards / electoral divisions ?
- (Civil parishes may be more stable ?)
- Do wards / electoral divisions often cross parish boundaries? Would it matter if a ward were in two parishes? (Rejoinder: means you couldn't definitively query any more for things in the parish)
- Very often share an item with village, town or hamlet -- is this appropriate ?
