Here we present the WikidataCon 2021 Grant for Wikimedia Affiliates in Latin America and the Caribbean, extended to non-regional groups that work in/with Latin America and Caribbean communities. With this Grant, Wikimedia Deutschland and Wiki Movimento Brasil – organizers of WikidataCon 2021 – aim to empower Global South communities to actively participate in the conference, from October 29th to 31st, and in the Wikidata community.

This proposal addresses directly the strategic orientation of creating the needed infrastructure for knowledge equity in the context of a remote conference amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. With no possibility of holding an onsite event as we traditionally do for WikidataCon, we have changed directions: in order to support Global South wikimedians to participate and engage from the safeness of their homes at the conference, we are also encouraging the development of local hubs organized around Wikidata. We understand that WikidataCon 2021 can be quite hard to keep up if you're a new user, so the local events organized by the affiliates should provide background on Wikidata topics and connect the participants to our broader community!

This is an experimental grant that intends to provide resources to affiliates for organizing online introductory and capacity-building events on Wikidata to help prepare, engage and empower their communities to participate in WikidataCon 2021. We hope that after the conference the participants of the affiliate's events will become active users and bring their perspectives to our Wikidata community!

Open call for proposals: August 25th to September 12nd September 18th (extended).

Projects must be completed by October 27th, 2021.

Summary of the Grant edit

We encourage affiliates to organize local online events around Wikidata topics to support their communities on meaningfully joining this Wikimedia community!

Each affiliate will be able to request support for up to 30 participants for 1-or-2-day online events plus the three days of the conference. The amount per participant/per day is up to EUR 30,00 and has to be used to create the means and allow participants to stay at home, stay safe, and dedicate their time to learn about Wikidata and engage meaningfully with WikidataCon 2021.

These proposals will be evaluated by the WikidataCon 2021 organization team committee, that will be responsible for determining which ones will be selected. You can find more information on the process and the timeline for the application here.

All the participants of the Affiliates events will be supported to join WikidataCon's three-day program and they are expected to engage in a designated session at the conference to share their experiences, so we can learn from each other.

The calculation for the value requested is based on the number of participants of the online events and cannot exceed the relative amount for 30 participants per Affiliate. All the costs have to be well-justified in the proposals, according to local specificities, and are expected to be reported with valid receipts.

The agreed amount will be sent to the Affiliates in a number of installments to be specified by Wiki Movimento Brasil. It is worth noting that international bank transfers in Brazil require specific documentation, including a formal agreement, which we will help you prepare.

All affiliates will be expected to fill out an on-wiki report describing their events, achievements and costs by October 27th. It is important that all expenses are specifically calculated because any unused funding must be returned with the final report.

Calculation of the amount that can be requested edit

Total amount requested[1] = [ (Number of days of the online event – 1 or 2) X (number of participants) X EUR 30,00[2] ] + [ (3 days of WikidataCon) X (number of participants) X EUR 30,00[2]].

This grant call has limited funding, and though we will do our best to make your pre-conference event a success we cannot guarantee we will fully fund your request.

If you have questions, please do no hesitate to reach out to: Amanda Jurno, amandajurno wmnobrasil.org. Also, we are online and available at the Office Hours.

  1. The maximum amount allowed per Affiliate is EUR 4,500 – which represents the total amount for a proposal of a 2-days online event for 30 participants.
  2. 2.0 2.1 EUR 30,00 is the maximum amount allowed per participant/per day. You can ask for the amount you think is appropriate for your local community, that is in accordance with your calculation of costs, and which will be fully reported with valid receipts.
