The Smithsonian Wikidata Institute is a course from WikiEdu for staff of Smithsonian Libraries sand Archives and the Biodiversity Heritage Library. This page is for staff participating in the course, and includes assignments, resources, and other helpful information.

  • Complete the Introduction to Wikidata course in the Wikidata Professional part of WikiEdu.
  • Create a Wikidata account and edit your own profile page on Wikidata to introduce yourself and state your intent with Wikidata.
  • Edit one item by adding a statement, adding a reference url, or correcting an existing statement.

WikiEdu Certification Assignments

These are the assignments for the Smithsonian Wikidata Institute. The assignments are available on the dashboard as well.

  1. Property deep dive: Find a property without a reference in any Smithsonian-related item and add a reference (reference URL, retrieved, or stated in) from the Smithsonian.
  2. Querying Wikidata: Use SPARQL to query Wikidata for items associated with any Smithsonian project.
    • This is a breakdown of item count by project, for example.
  3. Wikidata tools: Use a tool like Mix-n-match to process outstanding work on a community project or Author Disambiguator to associate a Smithsonian affiliated author to their publications in Wikidata.
  4. Data Modeling / more tools: Add 1 Smithsonian-related item of your choice using Cradle.
  5. Wikidata Projects: Sign up for any Smithsonian project
  6. Batch editing, staying engaged, running your own project: Use Quickstatements to add or update items
