Just because I can... I'd like to say:

Why do the "articles" have strange names like Q386 and what does the Q mean?Edit

-- 16:22, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

Because it's a multi-lingual project and giving items a name in a particular language would be favoring that language. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 16:27, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

Village pumpEdit

Is this talk page intended to function as a general discussion forum, or should we have something lie "Village pump" on en.Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons? Pigsonthewing (talk) 16:48, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

Up for discussion but I think a separate one makes sense. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 16:51, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
See Wikidata:Project chat (which could really use a better name, imo). --Yair rand (talk) 21:19, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

Automating tasksEdit

Shouldn't updates like this one (and indeed the creation of that page, which I did earlier today) be done by a bot? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:18, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

Yes and it likely will be at some point. However for now we asked bot authors to not run their bots yet to give people some time to get used to the system and play around without bots interfering already. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 19:21, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

Can't see task forcesEdit

Why task forces doesn't appear (Wikidata:Community_portal#Task_forces)? --Stryn (talk) 07:09, 12 December 2012 (UTC)

Looks good!Edit

I like the current layout of this page. Maybe this could be set for translation? --Stryn (talk) 12:20, 17 January 2013 (UTC)

Problem saving?Edit

I tried to add an interwiki for Q5072417 for : fr / fr:Pseuderemias striatus. Saving failed because "Site link frwiki:Pseuderemias striatus already used by item Q5079348".
This is true, but species Pseuderemias striata is a synonym of Pseuderemias striatus, so on fr: the first is a redirect on the second. I will not add an interwiki on a redirect, and whatever each wikipedia can follow different classifications (in one of them striata could be a valid taxa, on fr: it could even not exists).
So what to do in this case? In the same way the higher taxa can be fusionned with an other one (typicaly we do that when a higher taxa includes only a singler lower taxa on fr:, but other wikipedias create separated articles).

Hello. I added it as an alias in this edit. Also, the project chat is a more appropriate place to use in the future. :)  Hazard-SJ  ✈  20:56, 16 March 2013 (UTC)

"no" instead of "Norwegian"Edit

I have been looking around for a while but haven't found a way to replace "no" by "Norwegian" (or "Norwegian (nynorsk)"?) in the languages template (top of page, where the level of completion of the diferent translations is shown). Anyone can fix it? Thanks. --Qllach (talk) 14:12, 11 May 2013 (UTC)

Typically no = nb or Bokmal. Nynorsk = nn. In essence whatever is no should be nb when it refers to the no.wikipedia. GerardM (talk) 10:30, 22 August 2013 (UTC)

new task forceEdit

I've created a new task force (Wikidata:Tennis task force), but it doesn't show up in the list on the front page. This seems to be true for at least another task force (Wikidata:Iranian Persian Taskforce).--Kompakt (talk) 06:36, 28 May 2013 (UTC)

After I purged the page, these task forces are shown. --Michgrig (talk) 08:39, 28 May 2013 (UTC)

I have a question at Talk:Q6499403 concerning how disambiguation pages are linked. There appears to be a need for two different WikiData pages for each disambiguation page. -- 11:55, 9 July 2013 (UTC)

Also Talk:Q451539 with similar problems. -- 13:42, 9 July 2013 (UTC)

Let me point you to Wikidata talk:Disambiguation pages task force/guidelines for guidance. Littledogboy (talk) 15:28, 9 July 2013 (UTC)
So, how do we fix this? Clearly, only the same spelling is acceptable, per the guidelines, how do I determine what the spelling is for the Q-page? How do I find other Q-pages to migrate the links to for the other spellings? -- 00:52, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
I'm ashamed to say, we kind of do this manually. Look at 中山 (Q13713456), Nakayama (Q451539), and Zhongshan (Q13713349) now. The problem is, sometimes disambiguation in one language is linked to a non-disamb page in other, otherwise I'd say: throw them to the bots. Littledogboy (talk) 11:13, 10 July 2013 (UTC)

Q764962 Somebody Up There Likes MeEdit

Would like to link it with new German article “Die Hölle ist in mir” but when I press "add" it is only possible to “cancel” while it is not possible to press “save”. This error occurs for some days now. Who can help / explain? Best regards, Chivista (talk) 16:54, 24 July 2013 (UTC)

Done. I had problems with the GUI, too. After I reset my preferences to default (German: Einstellungen => auf "Alle Standardeinstellungen wiederherstellen" klicken) everything worked again.--Kompakt (talk) 18:34, 24 July 2013 (UTC)
Thank you very much for your explanation and amendment. Unfortunately, I cannot find this path on my PC. Guess, I have to wait until my son will be returning from his vacation trip :-( Well, this won't be long and I guess I will find no time anyway to write a new article tomorrow or the day after. But if you - or anyone else - should read this, you (she/he) could also link my latest German article de:Blaues Hawaii with Q2075102. Thanks again and best regards Chivista (talk) 20:30, 24 July 2013 (UTC)

Why does my "Site id" default always involve Canadian English?Edit

Wikidata borrows en-ca from my user preferences to default the field values.
So I get helpful messages like this:

The site id "en-ca/eswiki" is unknown. Please use an existing site id, such as "enwiki".

when I am simply trying to update an eswiki link.

Why can data pages not be edited today?Edit

Both pages I wanted to update would not allow editing. Varlaam (talk) 02:52, 20 August 2013 (UTC)

What are the items in question? It's probably the result of page protection.--Jasper Deng (talk) 02:59, 20 August 2013 (UTC)
Hi Jasper.
The Top 100 Crime Novels of All Time
The [edit] buttons are there for me as an IP user.
When I log in, they vanish.
I had earlier added 4 of the links on that page.
Le Monde's 100 Books of the Century
I have edited this page many, many times.
Varlaam (talk) 14:17, 21 August 2013 (UTC)
Also, since there is a problem here, I have gone back to adding interwikis in WP the traditional way.
Are bots still actively looking for such links there, and then updating Wikidata automatically?
Can I trigger a bot on a certain WP page?
Thanks, Varlaam (talk) 14:39, 21 August 2013 (UTC)
Which browser are you using? Do you have any gadgets enabled? Aude (talk) 09:28, 22 August 2013 (UTC)
Same problem today.
I am using an antique Internet Explorer on Windows XP.
(Since I only use this PC to write WP articles and read the news, that's good enough.)
I don't know what gadgets are. Is that in Preferences somewhere?
As you may have seen, I have edited here lots of times until recently. Every flavour of Wikipedia is still working for me, even the one where I'm blocked, as is Commons, and some Wiktionaries. Wikidata is unique in this respect, to my knowledge.
If you have a theory, I can try Wikiversity, or places I don't ordinarily visit.
I was our office's main software debugger in my day. Software is what got me on TV. Varlaam (talk) 17:27, 22 August 2013 (UTC)
P.S. Is my unaddressed Canadian English problem (see above) a factor in this?
My account has [edit] buttons here at the library where the PCs have a more current O/S and browser.
So it's a property of an archaic browser, and the problem began just a few days ago. The issue is why Wikidata and nowhere else.

Hi, I can´t help, but this has been discussed on Wikidata:Contact the development team a few times, so ask there, or look it up in the archive. Best, Littledogboy (talk) 08:57, 23 August 2013 (UTC)

Wikidata staff is already aware of this (Aude above is part of the staff), and also bug report has been opened. --Stryn (talk) 09:01, 23 August 2013 (UTC)
Hi guys.
Something has definitely happened.
1) The [edit] buttons are here today for me so I was able to rename a link.   Done
2) When I did so, no field value was defaulted to "en-ca", my earlier reported problem.   Done
So, that's 2 for 2.
Great work. Varlaam (talk) 19:15, 26 August 2013 (UTC)

Automatic update to the language sites?Edit

How come, when you have changed/corrected the language link to one page, the page on that site can still have the old interwikilinks for a long time after this? Shouldn't this be automatically updated immediately?  – The preceding unsigned comment was added by (talk • contribs).

Old links shouldn't be there after a long time. And purging the page should refresh the links immediately. --Stryn (talk) 07:28, 15 September 2013 (UTC)

Gadget for multiple page creation on Wikidata ?Edit

Can't figure out how to change wrong link from Gaelic > other languagesEdit

Currently [4] points to Cormorant and [5] to Great Cormorant but that's wrong as Sgarbh an sgùmain should point at European shag. But I can't figure how to fix that because when I go to Edit Links and try to change it it tells me the page already exists blabla. Akerbeltz (talk) 14:28, 27 July 2014 (UTC)

@Akerbeltz: Fixed. The problem is that two separate entries can't point to the same article, even for a second. You have to remove one entirely first and then add it to the other entry. Is there a gd entry for Great Cormorant (Q25440)? What is its name in Irish? Thanks. —Justin (koavf)TCM 14:37, 27 July 2014 (UTC)

Busan (Q16520)Edit

Why would one language link for an article not display on a lists of such links? I added ga:Busan a couple of days ago. The link to the Irish Wikipedia (which should appear as "Gaeilge") appears on the German Wikipedia and a couple of others, but I don't see it on most (Eng., French, Hindi, Breton). SeoMac (talk) 04:55, 30 May 2016 (UTC)

User:SeoMac: Sometimes it takes some time till the server's job queue is processed so the links show up on the Wikipedias. You can force this to be done manually for one article by purging the server cache for it then (e.g. by attaching "?action=purge" to its URL). However, in your case I don't know if this process may take up more than 24 hours (as your "a couple of days ago" was just slightly more than one), and I'm seeing the links without having purged the articles. Maybe it just is a cache issue on your site (e.g. your browser cached the versions without the link). --YMS (talk) 06:25, 30 May 2016 (UTC)
Thanks, YMS. I should be more patient! The Busan article now appears on the list of language links for every language I checked, except for English. That will come soon doubtless. I have been spoiled by experiences like ga:Yongle, my 100Wikidays (Wikimedia) challenge article for Monday. The Gaeilge link displayed immediately on all Wikis that I checked. Your comment about the browser cache is appreciated and I suspect important. I will look into that. SeoMac (talk) 04:16, 31 May 2016 (UTC)

Transform Wikidata:Community portal as the community center for announcementEdit

Currently Wikidata:Project chat is used to spread announcements like adminship request, bot flag request or RfC. Wikidata:Project chat is one of the most important places of WD but this excludes people who don't visit this page mainly because English is not one of their spoken labguages. In the other hand it is not possible to require that all announcements having a community impact have to be translated and announced in every linguistic version of the Wikidata:Project chat.

Can we imagine to use the Community portal as the center for these announcements ? The idea is to create a new section with 3 subsections adminship request, bot flag request and RfC. Each time a contributor want to start one of these 3 requests, ha had to had a link to the request in the corresponding subsections. We should avoid any translation in order to allow everyone using a translated version of the community portal to be able to see the changes. Any comment ? Snipre (talk) 20:17, 11 May 2017 (UTC)

My experience is that most users don't visit pages like this. Notices on the watchlist and recent changes work much better. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 20:31, 11 May 2017 (UTC)
Sjoerd de Bruin So the question is why: is it because nobody try to use these pages by providing up-to-date information or something else ? And don't you think your answer is true but only for contributors with a long experience of WD and completely wrong for newbies ? Snipre (talk) 20:39, 11 May 2017 (UTC)
I concur with Sjoerddebruin that Watchlist announcements are an effective means to communicate with logged in users; though that restricts alerts to administrators. So you simple need to work out the means to point to announcements wherever they are, and how you effectively collate your list. So I don't really mind where you have your announcements, it is the effective pointers to them that matter.  — billinghurst sDrewth 01:33, 12 May 2017 (UTC)
If a person doesn't speak English, how does it help them if they are alerted of an English RfC, adminship request or bot flag request? ChristianKl (talk) 20:59, 11 May 2017 (UTC)

Does Wikidata automatically resolve Wikipedia redirects?Edit

It appears to me that Wikidata automatically resolves Wikipedia redirects into the redirect target article. I think it should not do this. Just now, I tried to alter the en-wiki link for Q1956078 from en:w:Remença to en:w:Rebellion of the Remences which is currently a redirect on en-wiki, but although the input box sees that title and offers it for selection in type-ahead, when you select it and Save, it reverts back to Remença again. Imho, this is improper behavior, and it should allow the redirect article to be chosen, if that's what the user wants to do.

Although English doesn't currently have a main article at en:w:Rebellion of the Remences we do have the redirect and that is clearly the real equivalent in English to Q1956078. Some day, this redirect will undoubtedly be expanded into an article. When that day comes, why have Q1956078 pointing at the wrong article, when it could already be pointing at the correct one, the redirect-morphed-into-article?

It's too hard for software to determine whether a redirect is merely an alternative spelling or some other issue, so it shouldn't try; that's where humans come in. Let the software recognize the redirect, pop up another box containing the redirect, the redirect target, and if possible, the first sentence or two of the redirect target (like the wikilink hover pop-up), along with radio button selection, and offer the human the choice of leaving the redirect as is, or choosing the target article for that xx-wiki. For extra credit, also pop up all the other redirects pointing at the same target article (what links here, where source type=redirect) and include those in the radio button selection pop-up as well. That would be the ideal, imho. Mathglot (talk) 21:21, 11 June 2017 (UTC)

Consistency between Wikidata and WikipediaEdit

Wikipedia pulls data from Wikidata (in which time intervals?). Is Wikidata also updated from Wikipedia, e.g. after additions/changes to Wikipedia articles?

Each time you open a WP article, the latest version of WD data is used on the WP article. But the link between the WP article and the corresponding statement in WD has to hardcoded in the wikicode of the WP article.
Change in WP article are not uploaded in WD: only manual edit in WD can change Wikibase, the database of WD. Some WPs are experimenting special user interfaces allowing to edit WD from WP, but I don't have any news about this kind of experiments. But from what I know you can't change both WP article and WD item in one unique edit on WP side. Snipre (talk) 11:54, 6 July 2017 (UTC)

Looking for references regarding the Wikidata licenseEdit

I started a research project regarding the choice of CC0 as Wikidata license on the French Wikiversity.

Admittedly, a driving force behind the launch of this project is an intuitive aversion against CC0, and the will of the Wikidata team to launch their lexicological solution with, without, or even against Wiktionary communities. But as intuition is never as useful as when feeding hypotheses of rational inquiry whose conclusions might reject it, I thought preferable to make such a research project so I could stand on a firmer vision of implications of this choice.

Also, whatever one might ethically feel about this topic is one thing, legal issues is a really different matter. So far, I have didn't found any evidence of a serious inquiry of letting people make mass import of data within Wikidata. But hopefully I'll soon be given links showing such an inquiry was indeed performed. Not requiring sources and evidence of a free license covering imported data is a great way to put at risk of massive legal infraction, not only the Wikidata project, but anyone who reuse its data.

I welcome any reference that you might judge valuable for the research project evoked above. That is anything speaking about how the license was chose, opinion of the community regarding this choice, ins and outs of the reuse ability, what notable partnership was ease or prevented due to the license, how external reusers do or do not give back through one form (better curated or enlarged set of data), or an other (technical advises, institutional promotion, funds…), and anything you think worth mentioning regarding Wikidata license. It would be kind to check it is not already in the list of sources I fetched so far, but I prefer duplicate over missing a source of information.

Also let me know if you would be interested with a translation of this project. So far I'm writing it in my native language to hasten the draft outcome and I don't necessarily expect huge interest for the subject beyond myself. But if people do show interest, or even would like to contribute, I can switch to Esperanto, or even the less likely demand of an English version. ;)

Take the Subject of Licenses Seriously: a 2017 Community Wishlist Survey ProposalEdit

Hello Wikidatians,

Although I think every Wikimedian is concern, and even people reusing data from Wikidata beyond Wikimedia, but sure people in Wikidata might feel especially involved, there is a 2017 Community Wishlist Survey proposal regarding the topic of licenses. Your feedback and other contributions around this proposal are welcome.

Where to report errors in the data?Edit

It seems very typical of Wikidata that a far-too-long search has failed to find the page to do this (if any exists). It should be linked in bold at the top of several of the main landing pages. No, I don't want to learn how to fix it myself, thank you, or to contribute to Wikidata (which I've tried in the past). I want you to fix it. Grotta di Seiano (Q1547614) and Crypta Neapolitana (Q977606) are exactly the same thing - I'd merge to the latter. Thank you. Johnbod (talk) 13:57, 12 April 2018 (UTC)

Grotta di Seiano (Q1547614) links to de:Grotta di Seiano, and Crypta Neapolitana (Q977606) to de:Grotta di Pozzuoli - it looks like the latter is a mix of different topics that need untwining/moving over to the former. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 17:18, 12 April 2018 (UTC)
Yes, I'd already pointed that out to them. Johnbod (talk) 14:35, 14 April 2018 (UTC)

No, like I said, I don't want to fix it myself. No wonder WD is so unpopular with most of the community. Johnbod (talk) 14:35, 14 April 2018 (UTC)
What would you say to someone who said similar remarks about the English Wikipedia? After all, you have to learn wiki markup. --Rschen7754 18:05, 14 April 2018 (UTC)
@Johnbod: Please can you just explain us the principle of "wiki" ? We have perhaps a different definition because I never heard about a system where people have to do things. Snipre (talk) 20:46, 14 April 2018 (UTC)
Ok, whatever. Just don't complain when people say WD is full of errors & crap, there's nowhere to report it, and nobody there is interested in doing anything about reported errors. Johnbod (talk) 22:55, 14 April 2018 (UTC)

Wikidata:Showcase itemsEdit

What do you think about adding Wikidata:Showcase items page in the "Getting started" section? It's waaay to hard to find this page and it actually serves as a tutorial, at least for me if I edit entry in topic I'm not fluent. Yarl 💭  22:23, 13 May 2018 (UTC)

RFCs are featured too prominentlyEdit

RFCs currently occupy the second item in the "General discussion" section. This encourages many newcomers to start an RFC if they want to have some feedback about a particular edit they did, for instance. And they don't get any feedback because nobody sees these bogus RFCs.

RFCs are meant to provide a decision procedure for relatively important or contentious issues that have already been discussed at length elsewhere. So we should make RFCs less visible in this page, or change the wording to make it clear that newcomers should not go there. Each actual RFC should already be advertised on its own in the relevant places. − Pintoch (talk) 17:41, 21 November 2018 (UTC)

Heritage GLAM 2020Edit

Hello everyone,

In Punjab, India, we have been working on GLAM Wiki Project with government institutions of Punjab along with our community, a partnership we have maintained over the last year with numerous meetings with the officials.

This year, like last year, we are putting a project grant proposed by Open Heritage Foundation in 2020 round. We have successfully completed the 2019 project and are now moving forward with the second phase of the project which has now grown in scale with a non profit that we have built and grown over the past year.
Open Heritage Foundation is a non-profit based in India that works on focussed GLAM initiatives in alignment with Wikimedia's strategic direction.

This project is a Glam wiki project centered around Community growth supported by the GLAM partnerships for content generation, Integration with Community engagement around Wikisource and Wikidata, Wikipedia integration via the new tools we are creating in this project grant and the last and one of the crucial elements of the project is improving and expanding the readership scale for Wikisource project.

We will also be supporting other Communities via our micro grants and skill sharing knowledge pool that we have collected and grown over the years.

We lack adequate sources for citations for curating local encyclopedia content. To improve that, we need projects like these to generate that data so we can document our local knowledge with adequate sources to support that work, similar to the oral wiki project idea that talks about covering the indigenous knowledge sources with non traditional sources of information and knowledge creation.

Please feel free to ask any questions if you want to understand more about the project or have any questions for more clarification.

We look forward to your feedback, advice and suggestions for improvement in the proposal. We also welcome you to join us as Advisors and collaborators to work together for the success of the project.

Need merging helpEdit

Two Wikipedia articles have been merged, but the Wikidata is separate. Need to merge them. Can someone help? Here are the links:

Thank you in advance. Aditya Kabir (talk) 15:55, 18 July 2020 (UTC)

@Aditya Kabir: Even if there is a single Wikipedia article on a topic, there may still be two separate Wikidata items, e.g. w:en:Cohen brothers is one article about two subjects but we need three items here for structured data: one about Ethan Cohen, one about Joel, and one about the duo. —Justin (koavf)TCM 20:51, 18 July 2020 (UTC)

Waving off the import botsEdit

Is there a way to flag a Wikipedia page as not appropriate for Wikidata? I recently created a test page, w:Search:Infobox country in order to support a question at w:WP:VPT. This is not a valid article title, and it will be deleted soon, after the VPT question runs it course. In the meantime, is there a way to stop it from being slurped into Wikidata uselessly? I assumed the bots worked off of legitimate namespaces, so would ignore this title, but it didn't; it was imported by GZWDer (flood) (talkcontribslogs) as Q97798633. I stripped out the en-wiki link, and changed the label to "Delete me" since I don't know how to delete an item here, or nominate it for deletion. On en-wiki, we have w:Template:Bots with the |deny=botname option; is there something like that I can use, to tell harvesting bots here that they really don't want to slurp this item? I have template-writing privs, so if you tell me what you need, I can probably write it. Or how about this: if we add pages like that to a dedicated, w:Category:Pages not useful to Wikidata, and then your bot can just check for the category, before importing? (ping, please) Mathglot (talk) 02:51, 29 July 2020 (UTC)

Well, now the bot has gone ahead and added it again, creating Q97861414 in this edit. I won't unlink this one, because it will just do it again, probably; but after the trial run of this file at en-wiki, this file should be deleted. I'd still like to know how to stop the bot from doing this automatically. Mathglot (talk) 00:53, 30 July 2020 (UTC)

Merging failedEdit

Hi, I've tried to merge with, but an error occurred:

Error while "Merge with: Q3206248": The two items cannot be merged because one of them links to the other using the properties: P4792, P4661

Can anybody fix this. Cheers. --Agentjoerg (talk) 08:48, 1 August 2020 (UTC)
