New training material on Wikidata edit-a-thons: your input wanted

4
Sradovsk (talkcontribs)

Hello, everyone. In honor of Wikidata's 9th birthday on October 29, 2021, we have created a community documentation page on how to plan, run, and assess a Wikidata edit-a-thon. We were inspired by this page on how to organize a Wikipedia edit-a-thon and by the wisdom gathered in this Training documentation on planning a Wikidata workshop.

We are seeking input on the relevance and usefulness of the page, and contributions to improve it. If the community finds it to be helpful, we would like to offer its content as a new tab for the Training area. We would very much appreciate your comments on how to move toward that goal. Thank you!

This is a fantastic resource. I'm in the process of planning an event, my first, and there are really great ideas and best practices here

Sradovsk (talkcontribs)

Thanks, @MSwierenga-- please do enhance the page with any insights you gain from your experience!

Wikidata:Events/Wikidata for beginners

Datariumrex (talkcontribs)

Hello, I'm hosting a Wikidata event at Google Hangouts aimed at people who are new to Wikidata. I aim to help new users with what they want to learn about Wikidata by helping doing research for them. The main language is English, but we can use other languages too as long as all participants understand each other. Users who are not new and who want to help me and others learn Wikidata better are also very welcome.

Will (Wiki Ed) (talkcontribs)

Hi everyone, I want to take a minute to introduce myself: my name is Will Kent (User: Will (Wiki Ed)) and I'm the Wikidata Program Manager at the Wiki Education Foundation. I want to let you know that we are starting Wikidata workshops and courses where we will be training 30-40 librarians on how to contribute to Wikidata. Before any editing occurs there will be a comprehensive training process that details policies, etiquette, and frequently asked questions about Wikidata. After the training, we will encourage the groups to make manual edits. My colleague Ian (User: Ian (Wiki Ed)) and I will keep an eye on everything they edit through our Dashboards (here and here). We are responsible for any of their edits, so if you have any comments, concerns, or recommendations about these new edits and editors, feel free to share them with me. I'm excited to be working with them and look forward to seeing the impact that they will have on Wikidata.

If you are curious about the training modules, feel free to look at them and provide any feedback on my talk page. Anything regarding clarity, content, examples, or anything else that comes to mind would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Wikidata Introduction Talk, 16th June 2019 (In India)

Hello all,

Thanks to the amazing resources provided here + content from the Daily Digests, getting ready with content was super easy.

This talk is scheduled in a Drupal Conference, and I would be there as a external community speaker.

I would have ~30mins for the session, I aim to cover the following:

  • Need for Wikidata type secondary respository (2-5 mins)
  • Introduce them to Wikidata (5-7 mins) + Showcase the power/utitlity
  • rdf triples and structure of Wikidata
  • Items Properties Qualifiers References
  • Query Session (5-6 queries)
  • Things you can do with Wikidata
  • Get involved - How can you contribute
Fuzheado (talkcontribs)

That sounds ambitious but doable! Nice outline.

Depending on the audience, what I have done that really turns heads is showing a few Wikidata Queries that are visualized - mapping, timelines, force-directed graphs, genealogical relationships, etc. Wikipedia is awesome but is actually quite retrograde in terms of visuals and interactivity. Showing Wikidata's interactive and visual possibilities beyond just static Wikipedia knowledge is very powerful.

Do let us know how it goes and share any slides when you can.

Lea Lacroix (WMDE) (talkcontribs)

Hello all,

Wikimedia Germany and the Open Knowledge Foundation Germany are organizing a Wikidata hackathon in Ulm (Germany) on 22-24 February 2019, and we're looking for volunteers to give some short introductions to Wikidata and tools, so the participants can learn more about them and start hacking around :)

The sessions would be the following:

  • Introduction to Wikidata (1 hour, 2 times)
  • How to query Wikidata? Introduction to the Query Service (1 hour, 2 times)
  • Query Wikidata with APIs (30min)
  • Open Refine: prepare your data to add them into Wikidata (30min)
  • QuickStatements: Mass import into Wikidata (30min)
  • New Wikidata Features (Lexemes, etc.) (30min)
  • Selection of useful Wikidata tools and gadgets (30min)

The Wikidata & Query Service intro would happen one time on Friday 22nd evening, one time on Saturday 23rd. The other sessions would take place on Saturday. The event would take place in German, the introductions should be in German as well.

The trainers could participate to the entire hackathon and their transport and accommodation would be covered.

Who would be interested to run one or several sessions during the weekend? If you're interested, feel free to answer in a comment below or contact me directly (lea.lacroix@wikimedia.de)

Thanks a lot!

Pages have been slightly restructured

2
Lea Lacroix (WMDE) (talkcontribs)

Hello all,

I just reorganized the different pages about trainings, to make it more understandable and the pages connected to each other. Here's what I did:

  • add tabs to access easily the different pages
  • create sub-pages for the five minute outline and the tips and limitations
  • connect better with Wikidata:Planning a Wikidata workshop and Wikidata:Train the trainers
  • redirect most of the talk pages to this one

I didn't touch the content so much, only the structure. The content is yours, feel free to update it, improve it, add more resources, tips and ideas :)

Fuzheado (talkcontribs)

Wow, nice work! Thanks for making a big upgrade to that page.
