Templates not using Translate edit

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the current system, but are any of the templates in Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Autotranslate supposed to be not using Translate? --Yair rand (talk) 01:06, 19 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

These templates was created (imported) before starting widely using Translate Extension. I support their migration to a new system (with importing all exists translations). --Kaganer (talk) 17:59, 20 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Translation hints edit

Dear collegues! For your information. Currently at the many translatable pages used some templates to create a universal links to translatable/localized content (pages, templates, media).

  • {{Lang links}}, {{LL}} — for links to another translatable page (created link over "Special:MyLanguage")
  • {{Translatable navigation template}}, {{TNT}} — to call the language version of the template that matches the language of the translation page (if available)
  • {{Localized media}}, {{LM}} — to call the localized version of the mediafile that matches the language of the translation page (if available); required standartized filenames in relation to the English version.

Please note and use! --Kaganer (talk) 14:41, 25 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Some suggestions for achieving translator friendliness edit

Hello all! I would like to suggest some good practices for translation administration:

When a translated page is edited, check that it is "translator friendly" before marking the changes for translation:

  • Avoid too small translation units. No split sentences or other things that require a specific word order etc. in the target language.
  • Avoid too big translation units. Split lists with much text with translate tags so each list item will be separate translation units. Split big tables so each row – or maybe in some cases cell – will be separate translation units.
  • Extract numbers etc. that are likely to change regularly to translation variables, and use the PLURAL parser function. That is important for languages with several plural forms.
  • Use the link templates mentioned above.
  • Generally wait at least some hours or a day after an edit to make sure the page is relatively stable again before marking the changes for translation, to avoid unnecessarily wasting the translators' time and work if several changes occur.

Policy addition edit

I hereby propose to add the following sentence to our TA policy, as it currently contains nothing about the approval process.

Bureaucrats are tasked with deciding whether to grant translation administrator rights,
and they are removed if a bureaucrat deems it appropriate to do so (e.g. due to inactivity).

This is basically what we already do, but I would like to have this added to the policy to avoid any misunderstandings. I am going to implement this in 3 days, unless there are any objections. Cheers, Vogone talk 23:22, 28 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Good idea since, like you said, right now there is nothing about the current approval process. The Anonymouse (talk) 01:21, 31 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Ask for translation edit

Hi, where is the correct place to ask to mark a page for translation? I want to ask to mark Wikidata:WikiProject sum of all paintings but I don't know if I should to write some translation admins or if there is a place for requests. Thanks! --Dvdgmz (talk) 11:55, 15 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

@Dvdgmz: Requests appear on Special:PageTranslation. I have just modified the page for better translating and maintaining. Before marking for translation, I would recommend you to create a subpage for "Participants", so we don't have to mark the page everytime someone adds themselves. Matěj Suchánek (talk) 14:03, 15 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
@Matěj Suchánek: Thanks!   Done. look the section using subpage. Then, in other cases, if I want to mark for translation a documentation page I only have to put the languages and translate tags and I don't need to ask for that anywhere? --Dvdgmz (talk) 09:28, 16 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
@Dvdgmz: I am not sure I understand you. If you modify a translatable page, translation admins can mark it if they don't see any problem. (Marking for translation can be only done by them.) Matěj Suchánek (talk) 12:31, 16 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
@Matěj Suchánek: What I want to know is how to ask for a page to be translatable. Adding <languages/> in it? <translate> tags as well? Or only asking for that in some place like WD:TN? --Dvdgmz (talk) 12:42, 16 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
IMO you don't have to ask anywhere. Adding <translate> is sufficient. Matěj Suchánek (talk) 12:46, 16 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
Asking at WD:TN is certainly a good approach, but in case you're willing to read into the technical aspects, there is documentation available. Except for the marking itself, you should be able to do all this yourself, if you are willing to. After you familiarised yourself with all the documentation, I'd also see no problem in just granting you the translation administrator right, we are always in need of people doing this kind of work. Regards, Vogone (talk) 22:45, 17 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
@Dvdgmz: WD:TN is the appropriate noticeboard for translation-related questions and requests. Vogone (talk) 10:39, 16 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
@Vogone: Thanks, I'll use WD:TN for future questions. --Dvdgmz (talk) 12:42, 16 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Ask to move a page title edit

Hi, since nobody opposed here there is the need to move the name of this project page to a more genenric title. I'd duggest "disambiguations" or "disambiguations and homonymes".

There is a lot of wor to be set up for the next years and it' can't be done without an appropriate hub. Please? Alexmar983 (talk) 13:29, 24 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

Weekly wikidata Summary #620 - Admin please mark changes for translation edit

Dear Translate Admins,

I have just submitted the latest Wikidata:Status updates/2024 03 18 #620. I have added <translate> tags based on previous examples and instruction from Mohammed Sadat (WMDE), but I do not have admin rights to mark them for translation. I would be very grateful if someone could process that for me, thank you.

Kind regards, Danny Benjafield (WMDE) (talk) 12:26, 18 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
