Launch of WikiProject Wikidata for research edit

Hi, this is to let you know that we've launched WikiProject Wikidata for research in order to stimulate a closer interaction between Wikidata and research, both on a technical and a community level. As a first activity, we are drafting a research proposal on the matter (cf. blog post). It would be great if you would see room for interaction! Thanks, --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 01:48, 9 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

start time (P580) should not be used like proposed edit

Hi, Given that start time (P580) should be used as qualifier, I suggest to use it as a qualifier of significant event (P793). Example : Q15628564#P793. Louperivois (talk) 00:54, 25 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

That's an interesting idea. What item would you propose as a stand-in for "beginning of official relations"? Pikolas (talk) 16:31, 25 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
Because the items used in significant event (P793) should be sub-classes of occurrence (Q1190554), we should create event items like : "establishment of diplomatic relations" and "establishment of official diplomatic relations" and use the qualifier point in time (P585). Or we can use more than one element in instance of (P31) like bilateral relation (Q15221623), "diplomatic relationship" and "official diplomatic relationship" and qualify them with start time (P580). I prefer the first option but why not. Louperivois (talk) 00:51, 26 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
I imagine some countries have established relations unofficially with one another, and some might not even have a date for official relations (what'd be the official date of establishment of France–Germany relations (Q567497), for example?) Pikolas (talk) 18:11, 26 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
This proposal doesn't add information fields, it just changes the way to organize them. If there is no start time for "establishment of diplomatic relations" or "establishment of official diplomatic relations", we just don't use it. What is more sure is the date of official opening (P1619) of a diplomatic mission (Q213283) so we can use this claim directly on them. Louperivois (talk) 21:01, 26 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Claims for bilateral relations of countries edit

There is a lot of stuff imported about Germany by user:DavidMar86hdf that have filled the constraints violations for diplomatic relation (P530) (see) and diplomatic mission sent (P531) (see). I have to say that diplomatic mission sent (P531) is pertinent in the bilateral relations items, but with the value of item, not address. Example : the two claims country (P17) in Canada–Germany relations (Q1861028) should have the qualifiers participant (P710) and diplomatic mission sent (P531) = Embassy of Germany, Ottawa (Q5369697), Canada House (Q1723504). Now this information related to the embassy is stored directly in Germany (Q183), the qualifier diplomatic mission sent (P531) is unproperly used as claim, and the claim diplomatic relation (P530) is unproperly used outside of the domain state (Q7275).

Semantically, it would be better than diplomatic relation (P530) in the state (Q7275) elements would contains directly the bilateral relations items, without qualifiers, but this is a huge change.

Louperivois (talk) 02:47, 26 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

UserːPopcorndude proposes to change country (P17) for participant (P710). This imply to enlarge the scale of participant (P710) to all relation (Q930933). It is also proposed to change the constraints of diplomatic mission sent (P531). If interested in this field, it is discussed here. Louperivois (talk) 16:49, 9 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Ambassador and lists of ambassadors edit

What should we do with elements like Canadian ambassador to the United States (Q32208) and Canadian ambassador to the United States (Q19025530) ?

Is it acceptable that lists are used as value for position held (P39) just changing the label ? Or we should have 2 separate elements ? If so, there is a lot of elements to split, as this one.

And should we create about 200^2 elements for each ambassador function ? Or it is acceptable to use qualifiers country (P17) and even of (P642) like Q2076683#P39 ?

Misuse of the "country" of a consulate edit

This page clearly states that for a diplomatic mission (ex: consulate, embassy) the "country" is where the diplomatic mission is. From the ontology:

country: an item which is an instance of (P31) sovereign state (Q3624078) where the sovereign state (Q3624078) hosts the diplomatic mission (Q213283)

So, for instance, for the embassy of Togo in Mali, operator=Togo and country=Mali.

Despite this, I had to fix Australian Consulate in Luanda, Angola (Q23891474) where country had the value "Australia".

I guess this is due to the mistaken understanding that an embassy is actually land of the sending country.

Cheers! Syced (talk) 02:58, 1 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Help wanted: Add "operator" to 500 embassies edit

We have hundreds of embassies, but only 4 have an "operator".

Embassies lacking an "operator" field (dynamic query)

For instance, for the Embassy of Canada, Washington, D.C. (Q137245): please set the operator (P137) property to Canada (Q16).

Your help is very appreciated! :-) Syced (talk) 04:01, 1 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Plus about the same number lacking both operator and country. Syced (talk) 06:47, 2 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Done :-) Syced (talk) 08:30, 7 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Sub-property "embassy > of" spotted in the wild edit

I just noticed that Legation of Yugoslavia, Berlin (Q1497336) is an instance of embassy with a sub-property of (P642) with value Kingdom of Yugoslavia (Q191077).

This is interesting but duplicates information which this project page says should be in operator (P137). What do you think? Syced (talk) 07:54, 7 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

operator (P137) as instance of sovereign state (Q3624078) is imprecise for embassies/consulates edit

Jura1 reverted my edit where I set the operator (P137) of Embassy of the Philippines, Washington, D.C. (Q5369939) to Department of Foreign Affairs (Q3545663) instead of Philippines (Q928). While it is true that a country does "operate" its embassies and consulates, this is imprecise because the actual entity that operates the embassy/consulate is often an instance of foreign affairs ministry (Q21503582) or even a sub-unit of such an entity. If you want to get the actual instance of sovereign state (Q3624078) that sends the embassy/consulate, then use a more sophisticated SPARQL query or use a different property instead of operator (P137). —seav (talk) 23:42, 28 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

I don't think either is ideal, but if you change just one, it would be inconsistent with the 2000 others. If you decide to change it, please update the project page.

Exports in items about bilateral relations edit

Notified participants of WikiProject International relations. What do you think of using total exports (P2135) in items that are bilateral relation (Q15221623)? This would be to structure data about data such as this. Qualifiers would also be needed. NMaia (talk) 01:23, 2 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

New list of consulates edit

Hello! Don't you object to putting this consulate list, updated by Listeriabot, to Wikidata:Wikivoyage namespace? Like in Wikidata:Wikivoyage/Lists/Embassies. I can't write a better query, but if I post it, the query can be freely expanded or modified. Palotabarát (talk) 09:21, 17 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Side accreditation edit

Is there a nice way to model side accreditation (sorry if this is an incorrect translation)? For example Sweden’s ambassador to China being accredited also to Mongolia? Belteshassar (talk) 06:56, 16 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Belteshassar: my solution example Béla Jávorszky (Q12814813). Hungarian ambassador to Estonian, accredited Latvia, diplomatic mission sent (P531): Hungarian embassy, Tallinn (Q67005648). Hm? Palotabarát (talk) 08:46, 16 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Matching Wikipedia Templates of Diplomatic missions by nation edit

As of 19 September 2021, I have checked and linked all the templates I could on English, Swedish, Norwegian, Italian, Ukrainian, Hungarian, German and French Wikipedia to the ones that exist here.

For anyone curious, these are the categories/rough phrases I searched on each Language Wikipedia. Feel free to comment with your own search techniques for any languages.

Would love your questions/feedback also on what properties these wikidata items should have Shushugah (talk) 17:38, 19 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Dhx1: the conflation of chanceries/embassies is easy to distinguish within Wikidata, but harder on Wikipedia, since the two topics are so heavily enmeshed with each other. I agree with you generally. The templates themselves to best of my knowledge do not link to other templates, such as lists of ambassadors etc.. The case of en:Nordic Embassies (Berlin there is the appropriate en:Embassy of Sweden, Berlin but nothing else for Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Norway, so I pragmatically linked to them, to encourage new article creations/expansions. We can fix those, but they're not a pervase issue across different templates. I do wish there was an easier way to link the images of the chancery to the diplomatic missions, since the Wikidata modeling is correct but not very flexible in showing closely related commons links. That may change in future updates to Wikidata I hope. Anyways those are not about the templates wikidata items, but individual templates' content on the respective Wikipedias.
