Lighthouses vs islands edit

Most lighthouse articles (and Wikidata items) in my Finnish collection are combinations of lighthouses and natural formations they stand on. Before I start to do an immense bisecting operations, I ask what is the right thing to do. I presume the islands and lighthouses must be made separate entities.

  • (1) How to decide how to relink the articles in different languages?
  • (2) How should the infobox be created to read the correct data?

/ Susannaanas (talk) 15:56, 14 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

  • It's a frequent problem when one starts expanding items. Sitelinks on items generally just consolidate what people used before: interwikis to related articles in other wikis. These may or may not be about the same concept.
The point when one realizes that they need to be split is when starts getting conflicting statements about these concepts.
In this case, I would start out by adding lighthouse (Q39715) to items that may already have skerry (Q216851) in P31. For items where this is a problem, eventually they would be split into two or more items. If you want to do this beforehand, obviously, you are free to do so.
To answer your questions (I took the liberty to insert numbers in your post).
(1): Personally, I wouldn't sort them initially. If the need arised, one could proceed as follows: if it's called "X lighthouse", it would go on the lighthouse item. If it's called "X island", it would go on the island item. If it's called "X" and the article starts with "X is an island", it would go on the island item, etc.
    (2) If the infobox about the lighthouse is on the article associated with the item for the island, the infobox needs to have a field for the item id. This could look like this: {{Infobox lighthouse|item=Q1}}

{ Infobox lighthouse / item=Q1 } edit

has facility (P912) edit

The property might work well to link from (small) islands to lighthouses, e.g. Navassa Island (Q25359) at Q25359#P912 linking to Navassa Island Light (Q6982191). This could be read directly by infoboxes.

Short summary edit

Initially I added some content to this page to help Susanna prepare for a workshop. As I tried to avoid doing edits that could be done in the workshop, I focused mainly on adding lists to this page, rather than doing what I would be doing usually: identify and/or expand items about specific instances (that is items about individual lighthouses in this context).

  • The marginally useful list of Wikipedia categories has reached almost a third of the number of items for actual lighthouses. This without even covering every category that may still be at Commons. Some Wikipedia language versions might not be covered entirely either.
  • An interesting find from the category expedition is the meta category list. It illustrates information that might be gathered from categories. For other topics, it's probably worth doing such an overview even if one doesn't seek to identify categories in general.
  • /lists/Wikipedia lists shows that Japanese (and Spanish Wikipedia) have quite a few lists available. Currently, none of the lists in any language has a badge, so we would need to check individual lists to figure out which ones are fairly complete.
  • I did some attempts to improve cross-referencing items with Commons, but there is still work to do. Commons has a lot of lighthouse categories (and supposedly: images). Items with sitelinks to eswiki have a fairly low percentage of links to Commons. Maybe we just have no images either.
  • WikiProject Lighthouses/numbers gives a short status. The percentages for properties can given a measure of the depth of lighthouse items (or rather their shallowness). This only for items that have already been identified as being about lighthouses.
  • It's definitely worth identifying more lighthouse items that haven't been marked as such. This before creating new items for lighthouses.
  • For some of the missing properties, there are now proposals at WD:PP.

Hope this helps developing it. -- Jura 18:13, 14 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Lists by country edit

At Wikidata:WikiProject Lighthouses/lists/lighthouses by country, there is a new subpage grouping country lists. It's somewhat inspired by Wikidata:WikiProject Medicine/Hospitals by country which has one for every country.

Are you planning to add more countries? Lymantria (talk) 12:42, 29 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
Occasionally maybe, but if you want to do some or the full list (or at least countries with one lighthouse), don't hesitate ;)
--- Jura 12:47, 29 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
OK. Added at least the most numerous one. Lymantria (talk) 15:53, 29 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. BTW, it's a Listeria list. I added yours to the corresponding item, this would have made it appear automatically.
--- Jura 16:43, 29 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
Hmm, I'm not aware of what you have added to what item. I'm not using Listeria until now. Lymantria (talk) 21:26, 29 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
Ah, this one. Is that enough? Lymantria (talk) 21:31, 29 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
Yes. And a click on the "update chart" link.

All countries with 25 lighthouse items or more have a page now. Lymantria (talk) 11:45, 15 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
Nice. Maybe we should have one for all others as well: Wikidata:WikiProject Lighthouses/reports/lighthouses by country/few.
--- Jura 15:34, 15 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps include in these lists instances of subclasses of lighthouses, like Integral Lighthouse (Q3278565) and light station (Q27193297)? Lymantria (talk) 12:54, 23 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
I think I'd might have a hard time explaining their difference to the current value, so I'm not really sure about their usefulness as primary P31 values.
--- Jura 10:49, 24 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
I think light station is clear enough, a complex including a light tower but also keeper's houses etc. Apart from those two BTW, there are lightvessel (Q831515), light platform (Q25159781)... Lymantria (talk) 12:33, 24 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

nighttime view (P3451) edit

The property is now available. I added it to some of the country lists and made a gallery: Wikidata:WikiProject Lighthouses/lists/lighthouses at night.

When looking for images on Commons, I noticed that there are a few lighthouses with categories at Commons, but no item here. Eventually, it might be worth going through all Commons categories.
--- Jura 08:53, 15 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

I added some as well and indeed, some commonscategories do not yet have an item here. I added two of them. I als went through some cultural heritage properties without P31. That may have resulted in quite a few duplicates among lighthouses in the UK. Lymantria (talk) 11:44, 15 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
From this, it seems there are at least some 1000 to do. If they have coordinates, it might be fairly easy to find duplicates.
--- Jura 13:48, 15 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
Not in all cases the commonscat is to be added to the item (not if there is a gallery), but this seems like some work ahead! Lymantria (talk) 16:32, 15 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
Somehow things seemed broken or complicated when I looked for corresponding Wikidata items when at Commons. I think it would be easier if they used standard Wikidata based sitelinks.
Maybe we should wait till they finished importing lighthouses from OSM ;)
--- Jura 17:23, 15 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
After some thought, I think we should go ahead and create items for the missing lighthouses that already have categories on Commons.
--- Jura 07:20, 17 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
Yes, and linking existing items to commons-categories. I have found already quite a few (especially in the UK). Lymantria (talk) 09:01, 17 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
We could skip the UK ones initially.
--- Jura 09:21, 17 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
For automatic creation I would indeed prefer if we would. I am at the moment in some spare moments going through the UK items manually as there is a lot of matching to be done (merging, adding commonslink, etc.). Lymantria (talk) 17:10, 17 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
I just notice that the query didn't include them anyways (some 130). I will try to do the non-UK ones with QuickStatements. (PetScan doesn't work with Commons)
--- Jura 17:18, 17 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
Done including P17. For coordinates, I made a request at Wikidata:Bot_requests#Lighthouses:_import_P625_from_Commons.
--- Jura 20:51, 17 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
The "[Check Wikidata]" links on PetScan seem to work for finding existing items for the UK ones.
--- Jura 21:56, 17 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
I think the now remaining ones can be created. The "scott memorial" I am not certain about. Some of the categories are actually about more than one lighthosue. Lymantria (talk) 12:23, 21 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
  Done.

Descriptions edit

When adding items to listings on English Wikivoyage [1], I noticed that many "lighthouses" there are called "lights" here (English Wikipedia seem to have renamed some from "light" to "lighthouse"). To ensure these can be found, I added an aliases to most "Lights" here that makes it easier to find "Lighthouses" [2].

The absence of "lighthouse" in the description obviously also made it hard to find these items through internal search. To avoid this, I tried to add a basic description to every item, e.g. "lighthouse in <admin(1)>, <country>" or at least "lighthouse in <country>" (see Wikidata:WikiProject_Lighthouses#Descriptions). Eventually, this might include located in/on physical feature (P706) and/or located in or next to body of water (P206) as well. Obviously, if there is already a better manual description, I skipped them.

For lighthouses that no longer exist, it might be helpful to include when it did.

A new report descriptions cleanup allows to check if the country is included in the description. Exceptions could be hardcoded in the report (e.g. Q6982191). I'm experimenting with a few other checks, e.g. list items with no description.

Q32945146 edit

Not sure what to add as P31. BTW, I also made another one: Q32945459.
--- Jura 08:39, 12 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

I think it should be replica (Q1232589). Perhaps also tower (Q12518) assuming that it is not functioning as a lighthouse. I had some trouble with Belém Lighthouse (Lisboa) (Q28375667) - should we create an item "faux lighthouses"? Lymantria (talk) 10:39, 19 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
We could try and see how it goes. I came across one that went from "faux" to real (voy:Hansville_(Washington)#See).
I completed Q32945146 as suggested. Oddly, the enwiki article about the original doesn't even mention it.
--- Jura 21:29, 19 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
I did create faux lighthouse (Q33185258) and added it as instance of (P31) to a couple of items. Your example Skunk Bay Lighthouse (Q32857564) I think perhaps was meant to be a folly, but actually became a lighthouse quite regularly. Lymantria (talk) 12:32, 23 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

P31 edit

At reports/P31 check, I tried to do a report to check what other values can be found in P31. The query works, but Listeria has some problems right now.

Many seem fine, but some should probably be split into several items (e.g. island, fjord, mountain). "cultural property" can probably be removed if there is a P1435 value.
--- Jura 21:29, 19 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

Good report, I will dive into it later. Lymantria (talk) 12:13, 23 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
I moved most the most cultural property values ones (Norwegian they were) and split one or the other islands.

Lightvessels edit

I created a new list: List of lightvessels. Lymantria (talk) 12:13, 23 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

I added a few from Commons, even if I'm already annoyed by structures that get moved ;). It's tricky to add statements to these.

enwiki bot import? edit

There are a few lighthouses left in w:Category:Pages using infobox Lighthouse needing Wikidata item (see the explanation in the first section above about the content of that category). I think they could be imported in bulk by bot by creating new items with as much information as possible. Once done, the template at enwiki can reference the new item with "|item=". As the category isn't fully up to date, the bot should make a null edit on every article and then re-read the list of pages that remain.

If this creates an occasional duplicate, I would merge them afterwards.

What do you think? If you agree, we can try to find an interested bot operator.
--- Jura 17:15, 28 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

Good idea. Lymantria (talk) 22:12, 28 July 2017 (UTC) P.S. I wonder why some pages on lighthouses are listed? Lymantria (talk) 22:16, 28 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
The initial code to add the category didn't take into account multiple P31 values (and led to #P31 above). Without editing the articles, the category doesn't get removed.
The actual list of pages to handle is http://petscan.wmflabs.org/?psid=1187483 (378 articles). The same article can include other infoboxes as well.

located in or next to body of water (P206) edit

I wish someone could add at least one located in or next to body of water (P206) statement to all items about lighthouses and maybe also check if the existing statements are the most specific when it comes to the specific lighthouse. We should have bays and gulfs stored there instead of oceans when possible. Thierry Caro (talk) 09:46, 14 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

descriptive items for P1030 edit

For more frequent values of light characteristic (P1030), I was wondering if we should try to make descriptive items, e.g. Q45735358 for "Fl G 5s".

These could be queried when needed.
--- Jura 10:13, 15 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Wouldn't that mean that we have two types of values - items and string? I think that "item" value is to be preferred for all of the values of light characteristic (P1030) and not only the most frequent ones. It would help users if there is a good description in different languages and also some sources internationally use different coding (I saw Spanish and German if I recall correctly). What is more, some of the coding is duplicate - e.g. "Fl 5s" is the same as "Fl W 5s" - and that could be unified this way. Lymantria (talk) 18:04, 19 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
Tricky question. I added a few fixes to P1030 which reduced the number of values from 700 to 600 (approx). Then I imported some previously skipped ones from WP (which added much more variation). I started cleaning up that import, but it isn't fully done. I think the idea is that values would be "international" (meaning English).
It should be possible to parse these and convert them to some descriptive text as well (without having 2000 items, using, e.g. Q3142#P1813).
Obviously, images that display a specific pattern would need to be added to separate items. It's also possible to add a qualifier to link available items.
I'm not really convinced that an import would be easier if one would need to create items first and/or match them with existing items. When displaying it, the string format would be preferable as well.
BTW, maybe we should try to add "W" when omitted.

P5130 (P5130) edit

The new property brings some changes to lighthouse items, as it's meant to replace located in/on physical feature (P706) notably for islands/islets. As many lists include P706, these need to be updated as well.

What are the best modelled items for your area of interest? edit

Hi all

Over the past few months myself and others have been thinking about the best way to help people model subjects consistently on Wikidata and provide new contributors with a simple way to understand how to model content on different subjects. Our first solution is to provide some best practice examples of items for different subjects which we are calling Model items. E.g the item for William Shakespeare (Q692) is a good example to follow for creating items about playwright (Q214917). These model items are linked to from the item for the subject to make them easier to find and we have tried to make simple to understand instructions.

We would like subject matter experts to contribute their best examples of well modelled items. We are asking all the Wikiprojects to share with us the kinds of subjects you most commonly add information about and the best examples you have of this kind of item. We would like to have at least 5 model items for each subject to show the diversity of the subject e.g just having William Shakespeare (Q692) as a model item for playwright (Q214917), while helpful may not provide a good example for people trying to model modern poets from Asia.

You can add model items yourself by using the instructions at Wikidata:Model items. It may be helpful to have a discussion here to collate information first.

Thanks

I love WikiProject Lighthouses edit

I give Wikidata trainings regularly to new editors at in person events. I find it useful to talk about WikiProjects as community organizations which curate data models and provide guidance on what data to collect, where to get it, and what people can do with it.

I am posting to share that I often present WikiProject Lighthouses as a model WikiProject. I like this project because it seems simple, there is a good data model, and the data model had to be thoughtfully compiled for the special needs of this project. For example, nighttime view (P3451) is a very useful data field for the particular needs of lighthouses, but not typically as interesting for other buildings.

I love WikiProject Lighthouses! Thanks to everyone who contributes here. Blue Rasberry (talk) 20:25, 15 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure that Wikidata is the right place to map properties to infobox fields. It should be up to each community to decide for themselvs how to import and present data on their language version. How to formulate the contents of properties like color (P462) will differ significantly between languages. /ℇsquilo 14:33, 8 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
Agree mostly: the mapping done by this project is to see what information the projects might need and how we could provide that. It also allows to do imports.
To generate infoboxes on Wikipedia, every project must decide if and how they want to do that. --- Jura 15:06, 8 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

For a long time, this was WikiProject Names (with nice text), but finally it started updating (currently COVID). Maybe we could have it feature this project. I think it's a fairly well developed one that can still grow further.

The easiest would probably to create the description at Wikidata:WikiProject Lighthouses/Discover and eventually transclude that. If you feel like drafting one, please don't hesitate.

Catalogue numbers for NGA lighthouse ID (P3563) edit

Wikidata:Database reports/Constraint violations/P3563#"Format" violations lists more than 1000 violations of the formatting constraint for NGA lighthouse ID (P3563). This normally means it is missing the catalogue/issue number. Without this number the identifier is almost useless.
