Please be more careful with merges edit

Hi. I have had to revert a lot of your merges of individuals recently; you seem to be putting far too much trust in the "Duplicate authors" distributed game. Some hints:

  • DO NOT trust this with authors from large particle physics collaborations, or other articles with large numbers of authors. These typically use just first initial and last name in the author list, and there can be much more than one person with that same first initial-last name combination in the same list, or with the same collaboration over time, but still be very different people. Just stay away from large collaboration authors.
  • Be very careful with common names - anglicized versions of Chinese names in particular, but even Western names can be quite common - there are a lot of different David Jones's out there for instance. And this is especially true when you just have an initial and a last name.
  • Please check that the two items do not already have clearly distinguishing information! For example, you recently merged an "Alan J. Richards" with an "Alexander John Richards". Alan and Alexander are not the same; these are clearly different people! Or if each item has a distinct value for the same identifier - different ORCID id's for instance - please do not merge unless you have very clear evidence they are the same person.

Thanks. I'm hoping I won't have to do so many reverts going forward. ArthurPSmith (talk) 22:10, 13 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi - I'm glad you're eager to help - you've definitely done lots of good merges with this tool, it's just I have seen lots of problems too. To email me just go to my user page and there should be a link in the "Tools" list - "Email this user". ArthurPSmith (talk) 22:29, 13 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
Woulf definitely email you to learn more sir @ArthurPSmith Christian Yakubu (talk) 22:43, 13 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
You appear to be performing (if at least fewer, and if a bit more confined to Chinese names) incorrect merges again. Please take even more care than you may have been taking before. Mahir256 (talk) 20:23, 6 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Would be more careful sir.
Thanks for the advice🙏 Christian Yakubu (talk) 20:33, 6 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
