taxon name (P225)

Hi, Orchi!

Commonscat

edit

Hi. When adding Commons Category in the top set of properties, the category name should be added _without_ the prepended "Category:",it is a little confusing as the Commons interwiki it needs to be added if necessary. Thanks.  — billinghurst sDrewth

Merging items

edit

Hallo Orchi,

For merging items, you may want to use the merge.js gadget from help page about merging. It has an option "Request deletion for extra items on RfD" to automatically place a request to delete the emptied page. This way of nominating makes it a lot easier for the admins to process the requests.

Hello Cycn, thanks for your information. I'll do my best. Greetings. Orchi (talk) 18:21, 20 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Q20821

edit

Can you kindly explain why did you do this? Adamantinia is a monotypic genus with the only species, so first, there's no need to create separate articles about genus and species, and second no matter what name those articles has (Adamantinia or Adamantinia miltonioides), they must be linked to the single item. Regards, --Adriano Morelli (talk) 16:39, 4 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

The treatment of monotypics is diverse in the different WPs. Some countries prefer to build the genus, other the species. Therefore, it makes sense in Wikidata to use both terms. E.g. the statements in a Wikidata article for a genus are not compatible with the data of a species and vice versa.
According to your special question: I filled the wikilinks in the corresponding species article Q15104249. Greetings. Orchi (talk) 10:00, 5 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Ludisia

edit

Note about sorting fi:Ludisia, in that article title Ludisia is Finnish vernacular name of species Ludisia discolor but not a scientific name. Finnish vernacular name of species Ludisia discolor is (confusingly) just exactly the same as scientific name of genus. As Finnish arcticle is titled and deals the plant by species level, I linked it with other species level Ludisia articles. --Floscuculi (talk) 19:40, 30 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

I've just undone your merge of Telipogon diabolicus (Orchidaceae, Oncidiinae), a new species from southern Colombia (Q27048467) and Telipogon diabolicus (Q25839916) - the former is a scholarly article (Q13442814), the latter a taxon (Q16521). Neolindleya camtschatica (Q5979099)

edit

Hi Orchi, bitte nicht einfach taxon name (P225) u.a.

Capitalization of USDA PLANTS common names

edit

(Excuse my ignorance, I'm new at editing Wikidata...) You recently capitalized the common name of an orchid name which had a reference of USDA PLANTS database. USDA PLANTS database explicitly uses lowercase for common names unless they contain a proper noun. Can you clarify why you added a capital letter to the start of the name? Thanks! Hyperik (talk) 20:50, 29 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

....the English Wikipedia uses capital letters for the local names e.g. - Tolumnia. The vernacular names should begin in Wikispecies and Commons with a capital letter also. (That's how I learned it). Unfortunately, I do not know the rules of the USDA PLANTS database. Greeting. Orchi (talk) 21:31, 29 July 2018 (UTC)Reply
I read that English Wikipedia uses lowercase for common names of organisms.[1] On the page for Toulumnia that you linked to, it's only capitalized because it is at the beginning of a sentence. I'm not aware of Wikidata's policies but I would assume they might follow Wikipedia's? Hyperik (talk) 03:15, 30 July 2018 (UTC)Reply
....... I'm not an expert in English language rules. However, I see many names in Wikispecies and Commons with capital letters under the template:VN. All names are behind a colon. Greetings. Orchi (talk) 10:30, 30 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

Konsistenz für Amitostigma

edit

Guten tag, Orchi, mein Deutsch is schlecht, also werde ich auf Englisch weitermachen.

You and I have been editing in different directions on Commons gallery (P935) for Amitostigma (Q20842). Perhaps if we compare goals, we can come to some conclusion that works for both of us.

At the English Wikipedia, there is code that automatically links to Commons galleries and categories. That code looks up many wikidata properties to find those links. If the properties disagree, then the code gives up and does not return a link.

On Amitostigma (Q20842), Commons gallery (P935) was Commons:Ponerorchis while the Commons sitelink was Commons:Ponerorchis (ex Amitostigma), which is a redirect to Commons:Ponerorchis. These are not the same, so the code did not work.

The code will work if both of these are the same, or if only one of them is used. My last edit removed Commons gallery (P935) and left Commons:Ponerorchis (ex Amitostigma) as the sitelink. But for that to work, the redirect at Commons:Ponerorchis (ex Amitostigma) needs to work, so I restored that redirect.

I'm happy with any solution that makes the code work. I don't think we should have a sitelink that points to a blank page, however.

What are your goals in your edits? Is the current state acceptable to you? Hike395 (talk) 14:37, 1 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Hike395:
Hello Hike395, I tried to use the redirect link Amitostigma in Commons of Commons:Amitostigma in Wikidata as usual with synonyms. Since this did not work, we will use your version. Greetings. Orchi (talk) 09:52, 2 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
