Reminder edit

Hi Data Gamer,

Maybe you didn't get notified about the revert of your edit at [1] and my note. If not, please make sure notifications are actived.

To repeat it here: please don't change writing system (P282) of name items. If an item for a different writing system is needed, please create a new one. This also applies if some items using the item should be using the new item or some sitelinks need to be moved to the new items. In short: don't repurpose wikidata items. --- Jura 12:22, 23 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Jura1: but the Wikipedia articles in the item are for the Greek name Νικόλαος. Data Gamer play 12:26, 23 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

If you think sitelinks have been added to the wrong item, please move them (there is a gadget for that). Please don't make me repeat it again: don't repurpose wikidata items. --- Jura 12:27, 23 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Jura1: I just want to understand. The Nikolaos (Q1496652) is using only for Greek names. Check "What links here". Data Gamer play 12:30, 23 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
It's possible that uses need to be fixed. It might have been messed up when someone merged items incorrectly. --- Jura 12:33, 23 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Jura1: So can I restore it? Data Gamer play 12:39, 23 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
The P735 statements? Maybe .. I don't know. Wikidata:Bot requests can help when a large number of changes need to be made and you can't or don't want to do it yourself. Repurposing is not an option. --- Jura 12:41, 23 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Jura1: Just tell me, what Nikolaos (Q1496652) is, if is not the Greek name Νικόλαος? Data Gamer play 12:45, 23 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
It's "Nikolaos", a name spelled in Latin script (that may be transcribed as Νικόλαος in the Greek alphabet). Did you have a look at the Vassily samples? --- Jura 12:49, 23 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Jura1: But we also have Nikólaos (Q21029861), a name spelled in Latin script. Data Gamer play 13:07, 23 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
Spelling is different (compare the "native label" strings). The name can be spelled in various ways in Latin script, just like Vasily. --- Jura 13:46, 23 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
So if I replace in all items Nikolaos (Q1496652) with a new one (because they all are greek names), Nikolaos (Q1496652) will not link to any item. Why can we keep Nikolaos (Q1496652) as the Greek alphabet item and create another one for latin script? Data Gamer play 16:37, 23 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
If I dare, this can be a plan. If you check carefully all uses and create a new item for latin "Nikolaos" if needed. --Infovarius (talk) 00:18, 26 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
Also you are welcome to discussion about relevant moves to User talk:Matthias Winkelmann. --Infovarius (talk) 00:32, 26 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Counting named individuals edit

Hello, I saw your question to Jura and thought I might be able to help. If you find this response helpful, even if just partially, please notify and refer Jura to it so as to avoid us both spending time explaining the same things twice (I considered doing it myself by commenting on Jura's talk page but decided not to in case either of you would find my third-party involvement in your conversation inappropriate):

As the query is written, it will count not only the number of unique ?item values with a P735 link to the given name, but the total number of solutions to the query "equation". As I suppose very few individuals have multiple statements of either of "citizen of Cyprus", "instance of human", or "given name Andreas", this should normally be the same as the number of unique values of ?item, i.e. the count you are asking for.

However, you have an initial statement defining the variable ?countries as one of three different items. The SPARQL engine will try each value of ?countries in turn, solve the rest of the equation (where ?countries isn't used) and count the total number of solutions, where every ?item will thus appear three times, yielding a sum three times the number you actually want (look at the other end of your sorted frequency list; you will probably find that the least common given names will each appear a multiple of three times, thus 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 times and so on).

To avoid this, you may want to change the COUNT(?item) formula at the top to COUNT(DISTINCT ?item) instead; in that way the engine will still process all the solutions with different values of ?countries, but reduce the set of ?item values to one instance of each individual before counting them.

Note that if an individual has multiple given names (such as Andreas and Georgios), that individual will be counted once for each name, and the sum of all ?count values in the resulting table (if you were to calculate it) will then be higher than the number of unique individuals, but I suppose that's not a problem as you seem interested in the numbers for each name, not the number of citizens found with any name.

In this particular case, I suppose you could also avoid the problem by commenting out the unused VALUES line using a # character (or simply remove the line), but as I guess you have included it for a reason (such as to be used later on), I'd say the DISTINCT keyword should routinely be used when the number of distinct values is sought, not the total number of solutions. Even if you were to include the ?countries variable in the code, an individual may be a citizen of multiple political entities and will then be counted multiple times in your table. Using DISTINCT avoids this. --SM5POR (talk) 14:30, 1 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
