Erinnern für die Zukunft – Breite Straße 75

Hier lebten von 1920 bis 1933 in der dritten Etage Adolf Fuchs und seine
Frau Katharina mit ihren zwischen 1909 und 1919 geborenen vier Kindern.

Adolf Fuchs wurde am 17. Juli 1878 in Dornfeld bei Lemberg geboren und
kam 1910 nach Witten, wo er zunächst als Drucker arbeitete. Später leitete
er das Büro der sozialdemokratischen Lokalzeitung „Wittener Volkswacht“
in der Johannisstraße. In seinen Artikeln wandte er sich scharf gegen Natio-
nalsozialisten und KPD. Seit 1924 war er Vorsitzender der Wittener SPD.

Nach Morddrohungen durch die Nazis floh er zusammen mit seinem Sohn
Anfang März 1933 ins Saarland und von dort 1935 nach Frankreich. Nach
dem Einmarsch der deutschen Wehrmacht ergriff ihn die Gestapo und
verschleppte ihn in das Konzentrationslager Drancy bei Paris. Im September
1942 wurde Adolf Fuchs, der 1904 zum Katholizismus übertrat, als Jude
nach Auschwitz deportiert und dort umgebracht.

Seine Ehefrau Katharina, sein Sohn und seine drei Töchter überlebten in
Frankreich.
