Correct identification of this object edit
The correct identification of some NGC objects is difficult due to errors and misunderstandings of the original observer and of the astronomers that, during time, made and re-analysed the data.
Use the information of different sources, NGC 218 has different identifications: the galaxy PGC 2493 or the galaxy PGC 2720. The first identification is usually accepted, but here this has been questioned in favour of PGC 2720. The argumentation seems to be right and also NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database (Q488563) gives the same identification. So here we use the new one.
Source | Identifications | Link | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database (Q488563) | PGC 2720 = UGC 480 | [1] | right identification |
Lyon-Meudon Extragalactic Database (Q6709611) | PGC 2493 = UGC 440 | [2] | wrong identification! |
SIMBAD (Q654724) | PGC 2493 = UGC 440 | [3] | wrong identification! |
- Please do not use SIMBAD (Q654724) and Lyon-Meudon Extragalactic Database (Q6709611) databases using NGC 218 as name of the object to recover the data!
If you want to use these catalogues, please use in queries the name PGC 2720. --Paperoastro (talk) 11:05, 7 November 2014 (UTC)
