Correct identification of this object

edit

The correct identification of some NGC objects is difficult due to errors and misunderstandings of the original observer and of the astronomers that, during time, made and re-analysed the data.

Use the information of different sources, NGC 2458 has different identifications. Following the prescription of NGC/IC project NGC 2458 is the galaxy PGC 22220.

Source Identification Link Notes
NGC/IC project in VizieR (Q1662358) PGC 22220 [1] right identification
NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database (Q488563) PGC 22191 [2] wrong identification!
Lyon-Meudon Extragalactic Database (Q6709611) PGC 22191 (named also NGC 2473) [3] wrong identification!
SIMBAD (Q654724) PGC 22220 but also NGC 2461 [4] right identification, but wrong assignation NGC 2461
