Correct identification of this object edit

The correct identification of some NGC objects is difficult due to errors and misunderstandings of the original observer and of the astronomers that, during time, made and re-analysed the data.

Use the information of different sources, NGC 4170 has different identifications. Following the prescription of NGC/IC project NGC 4170, NGC 4171 and NGC 4173 are different objects: two stars and one galaxy, respectively (see also these two discussions for other informations)!

Source Identifications Link Notes
NGC/IC project in VizieR (Q1662358) star [1] right identification
NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database (Q488563) star [2] right identification

SIMBAD (Q654724) NGC 4171,NGC 4173 [4] wrong identification!

Please do not use SIMBAD (Q654724) database to recover the data of this object!
