Capitalization

edit

It seems to me that the English label for this item should be "blue jay", as it is not a proper noun. User:MPF has reverted me and changed it to "Blue Jay", pointing to the references for the bird's common name. It is true that the IOC World Bird List and the IUCN Red List list this bird as "Blue Jay"; however, both of those lists show every species name in titlecase. Per WD:L, Wikidata labels should reflect how the item would be named in prose, not how they would appear in a title. The National Geographic page for blue jays is a great example of this distinction — in the title and the stats box, they use "Blue Jay", but in prose (the image caption and the description paragraphs), they use "blue jay". I propose the label be once again changed to "blue jay". –IagoQnsi (talk) 21:17, 24 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Blue Jay, in this ense, is a proper noun: it is specific to the taxon Cyanocitta cristata, and is not the same as a blue jay, which means any species in the Corvidae which happens to be blue. Numerous other jays are blue, but they are not Blue Jays. From Help:Label#Capitalization, "Labels begin with a lowercase letter except for when uppercase is normally required or expected" - well, uppercase is normally required and is expected, in the case of formally accepted bird species names - MPF (talk) 21:31, 24 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
