Reasons this person is a dictionary hoax edit

The origin of the character of Janie Smiles (dictionary entry) is the Dictionary of Art Historians. All entries from the dictionary have been copied to the ArchInform database (database entry) and her entry does not add additional information. The reasons for this entry being fictitious are:

  1. Her Ph.D. supervisor is listed as "Semitic scholar Nesnores Eel (1907-1985)". This name is an anagram (almost reversed) version of "Lee Sorensen" the editor of the dictionary.
  2. Her "Selected Biography" isn't found in any library catalogue.
  3. The first source, a footnote in "Archäologenbildnisse: Porträts und Kurzbiographien von Klassichen Archäologen deutscher Sprache" doesn't exist. (discussion in German, thanks to Marcus Cyron for checking)
  4. The second source, a front page article on her death allegedly published in the Philadelphia Inquirer on February 19, 1998 doesn't exist on the newspapers.com archive.

Thus it is clear that this is a dictionary hoax. --Pyfisch (talk) 07:11, 11 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
