Wikidata for Digital Preservation

edit

Members of the digital preservation community collate and capture metadata to describe file formats, software, operating systems and hardware, and use it to inform and drive digital preservation processes. The vision of Wikidata for Digital Preservation is to use Wikidata as a technical registry of metadata related to computer software and computing environments. Collaboratively creating this metadata, and making it available as linked open data, will reduce the amount of redundant work digital preservation professionals do in order to describe resources. Having machine-readable, linked open data that describes the digital preservation domain will also allow us to reuse this data in our software applications and information systems, reducing the overhead when building new tools.

How to contribute

edit

There are many ways to contribute to Wikidata for Digital Preservation.

Here are some types of work that would be very helpful to the project.

Connecting file formats and software

edit

We need to create statements on software items using readable file format (P1072) and writable file format (P1073) to indicate relationships with file formats.

This information is available from the software itself. It is also sometimes described in the user manual or on a website about the software.

Reference example

edit

This is an item with relatively complete information about how it relates to file formats: GIMP (Q8038).

Where to start?

edit

Here is a query for software titles from developers with X LIST ID that do not yet have any readable or writable file formats listed.

The following query uses these:

Adding mediatypes to file formats

File format items that have multiple PRONOM ids

edit

There are some file format items that have multiple statements using PRONOM file format id.

If appropriate, we need to create additional items for each of the formats described in PRONOM.

Reference example

RED digital pictures (Q28205429)

Adding file format signature information

edit

If you have information about file format signatures you are welcome to add that information to the corresponding file format item.

Reference Example

Matroska (Q223535)

Adding external id info to software items

edit

External id properties have their own data type and are used to link out to datasets beyond Wikidata.

Adding references

edit

Some of the statements on software items in Wikidata do not yet have references. If you know of a source for statements it would be great if you would add them to Wikidata.

Here is guidance about how to create references Help:Sources.
edit

There are Wikidata items for some technical specifications.

If you have interest in being able to refer to a technical specification, you may make a new item for it and connect it to the file format it describes.

Adding statements about license to software items missing license info

edit

If you have information about the license under which the software was released, please add that information to Wikidata.

Adding statements about developers to software items missing that info

edit

To indicate the developer of a software title, we add information to the item for that software using developer (P178). It is possible to use the property more than one time if needed.

Working on a Mix'n'Match Catalog

edit

Mix'n'Match is a tool designed to help editors match items from catalogs to corresponding Wikidata items.

File formats that have at least one desc at URL statement

edit

Great place to look for additional documentation on the web about the file format.

If you are looking for sources of information to create additional statements, this could be a useful place to look.

Improve the items for software developers

edit

The Moby Games resource has detailed descriptions about many companies that develop software, especially games.

If you find an item for a software developer that does not yet have many statements, you may be able to create additional statements from the info on the Moby Games site.

Follow the link from the value for MobyGames company ID (former scheme) (P4773) on the item for the developer to see the Moby Games page for the company. Thank you for making the information in Wikidata more complete!
