Hi,

birth name (P1477) must be in native language (P103) only. — eru [Talk] [french wiki] 10:31, 30 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hello, @eru! What property should I use for the birth name in other languages, then? For example, I want to add information about the full name of Albus Dumbledore (Q712548) in Russian.

Sorry I didn't see your previous response (the notification didn't work because you didn't signe your message with ~~~~)
You only need to use the label, it's not a birth name if it is not in the birth language. same for name in native language (P1559). — eru [Talk] [french wiki] 17:44, 1 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

@eru First of all, sorry about not tagging you properly (I hope this time I'll do it the right way). I'm new to all this stuff and IMO this "user talks" pages are too inconvenient. I was going to send you a personal message to solve the issue but it looks like we don't have such a feature here...

So, to get back to the subject, I got what you're saying that birth name (P1477) should be in native language (P103) but actually I don't see any sign of this requirement on the birth name (P1477) page. That's why I originally decided to use it for my purpose. After you reverted some of my changes I decided to use more common property name (P2561) (which, again, has no requirements about the language from what I can see) -- but only for the entities where you reverted my changes. I see that you have not reverted this, so could I consider this is fine?

I'm not sure if it is fine to use label for this case. For example, (again from the Harry Potter universe) I believe Lord Voldemort (Q176132) label should be "Lord Voldemort" but not "Tom Marvolo Riddle" despite the fact that he was born with that name.

And the last one, could you please clarify what the warning is about? I haven't undo your actions (even if I not totally agree with you, for example in case of Ivan Chonkin (Q64786713)), I just added another property. — Blokhin.nv (talk) 08:55, 2 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi Blokhin.nv, the notification worked properly
Indeed, the only mention for language is in the constraint: "Only add multiple values of this property when the person has birth names in multiple languages. Add transliterations as a qualifier. (English)"
I have not yet looked at all your edit since 1/02, for russian literary character you can use birth name, for name (P2561) it's said "name the subject is known by. If a more specific property is available, use that", so I'm not sure
In your case it's a transliteration of the birth, so I thought: https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q944203&type=revision&diff=1353327538&oldid=1352748197 , but the language is not indicated
Sorry for the warning, I didn't see that you used "name" instead of "birth name", I was too fast, and for Ivan Chonkin (Q64786713) I make a mistake, it was lot of revert to do, you can revert me.
I will ask for the best course of action. — eru [Talk] [french wiki] 17:55, 2 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
ps : you can send ann email to the user (button "Email this user" on the left, when you are on the user's page), but I prefer use the talk page when I talk about wikidata. You can enable flow discussion, is more user-friendly, like on my talk page, in preference > beta feature. — eru [Talk] [french wiki] 18:07, 2 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
