By the way, you have also placed operating system (Q9135) at the end of a chain of follows (P155) claims back to computer hardware (Q3966). In what sense do they "follow" each other? In a boot sequence? Can you give a reference? If the claim does apply in some limited context, maybe it could be clarified using a suitable qualifier, or by making the claim itself a qualifier of something else.

Hello!

My intent is to describe the hierarchy of the different layers of systems. Hardware has firmware, which integrates with the operating system and so on. Feel free to do any changes you want, if you feel like there are better ways to describe this connection!

SM5POR (talkcontribs)

My comment to this is similar to the one I made in the previous thread; I'm unconvinced these layers are set in stone. Also, the follows (P155) / followed by (P156) sequential relationship seems like a poor fit for the layer metaphor (below / on top of does not translate directly to before / after). If you can point out two components that have a really strong mutual relationship, we could try to find a suitable property in that particular case and maybe extrapolate from there.

Hello!

I wanted to show hierarchical connection between the two systems, i.e. the run-time system requires an operating system to function. Feel free to do any changes you feel are necessary!

I see. Well, for software dependencies there is actually a property depends on software (P1547) (which is a sub-property of uses (P2283)). The property has part(s) (P527) rather describes what components make up the subject item, which is why I thought it looked "upside-down" (an operating system may contain one or more runtime systems, say, runtime libraries for various programming languages, but I can't really imagine a runtime system containing one or more operating systems).

That said, I'm not convinced every run-time system actually needs an operating system, at least not to a greater extent than any application program does. It boils down to what platform the application and its runtime system are built for, and a single-purpose device (such as a GPS receiver or MIDI synthesizer) may well let its software access any part of the hardware without any scheduler, memory protection or generic device drivers that would be included in a typical operating system.

Now, as I look at the property constraints for depends on software (P1547), they imply that both the subject item and the value are supposed to be specific instances of software (or a few related types), not general classes of software such as runtime or operating systems. Lacking an equally specific property for sub-classes of software, I believe the assumption of the community is that such properties are unnecessary. If you want a clarification on this issue, or you want to bring about a change, I recommend joining Wikidata:WikiProject Informatics and start a discussion there (on the Talk page).

If you think computer-related items on Wikidata look underdeveloped, I agree, but I haven't been able to spend much time on them yet. Let me know if you want suggestions for things to work on, and I can probably come up with a few...

Hi, could you add an English description/explanation for Q107984415? It's only used by Q1141067 and it's unclear whether it's appropriate/necessary. (it might already be covered by a pre-existing concept?)

Rotavdrag (talkcontribs)

I've added a description now. Thanks for the heads up!
