[17:02:51] <Auregann_WMDE> Hello everyone! Happy new year! Who's there for the Wikidata office hour? \o/
[17:03:04] <Lydia_WMDE> \o/
[17:03:26] <hweyl> I'm here for the Wikidata office hour!
[17:03:37] <Auregann_WMDE> Yaay
[17:04:00] * duesen waves to Lydia
[17:04:12] <Lydia_WMDE> :D hey
[17:04:19] <Auregann_WMDE> so, for people who are new to this meeting: first, we're going to go the news from the development team, what has been done over the past months, what's incoming
[17:04:29] <Auregann_WMDE> and on the second part, you can ask all the questions you want :)
[17:05:03] <Auregann_WMDE> the notes of the meeting will be published onwiki afterwards
[17:05:24] <Auregann_WMDE> sooo let's start with talking about development. Lydia_WMDE, what did we do since September 2018? :D
[17:05:35] <Lydia_WMDE> So many things!
[17:06:13] <Lydia_WMDE> Let's start with lexicographical data: we made a lot of small improvements and bug fixes so it's less of a pain and confusing to edit words
[17:06:37] <Lydia_WMDE> Like you now have constraint checks also on Lexemes for example and easier to understand error messages
[17:07:17] <Lydia_WMDE> You can now also write sparql queries that involve Lexemes so you can ask all the questions about words and get pretty visualisations to answer them.
[17:07:50] <Lydia_WMDE> But probably the biggest thing is support for Senses, so meanings of words. With this you can now help people (and machines) actually understand what a word means.
[17:08:18] <Lydia_WMDE> For example you can indicate that hot can mean something has a high temperature or that someone is sexy.
[17:08:38] <Lydia_WMDE> I'm really looking forward to seeing what people are going to build on top of that.
[17:08:54] <Lydia_WMDE> Then we did a bunch of things to help with data quality:
[17:09:46] <Lydia_WMDE> You now can enable a beta feature that gives you better suggestions when entering values that should come from a predefined list. Imagine things like blood group for a person. By suggesting the likely values we make it less likely to introduce mistakes accidentally.
[17:10:48] <Lydia_WMDE> We also worked on getting constraint check results into the query service so you can write queries that take constraint violations into account. A part of them are already in there. The rest will follow in the next weeks. Then you can write queries like "give me all the buildings around me that have quality issues"
[17:11:26] <Lydia_WMDE> We also added a map preview for all geo coordinates so you can easily spot a coordinate that doesn't make sense like a city that looks like it is in the middle of the ocean.
[17:12:06] <Auregann_WMDE> appart from if it's Atlantis
[17:12:41] <Lydia_WMDE> Then we worked on improving things for people on mobile devices by showing all languages for labels, descriptions and aliases instead of just English like now. But there is still more work to be done over the next weeks to see the result of that.
[17:13:05] <Auregann_WMDE> (we actually don't have a coordinate location property on Q25373 :( )
[17:13:23] <Lydia_WMDE> Then we looked at Wikibase use outside Wikimedia and made it easier for these installations to customize their query service with their own logo and examples instead of using Wikidata's.
[17:14:06] <Lydia_WMDE> And last but not least the structured data on commons team has been getting things ready for their first release and want your feedback:
[17:14:17] <duesen> Lydia_WMDE: the map support is great, but it should probably consider what globe the coordinates are for :) https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q43653#P793
[17:14:19] <Lydia_WMDE> a search prototype https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Structured_data/Get_involved/Feedback_requests/Search_prototype
[17:14:19] <Lydia_WMDE> New designs https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Structured_data/Get_involved/Feedback_requests/Statements_2
[17:14:19] <Lydia_WMDE> Beta testing for multilingual caption is about to go out! https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons_talk:Structured_data#Multilingual_captions_beta_testing
[17:14:36] <Lydia_WMDE> duesen: it should already
[17:14:51] <Lydia_WMDE> duesen: else file a ticket please :P
[17:15:12] <Lydia_WMDE> and with that i hand over to Auregann_WMDE
[17:15:53] <Auregann_WMDE> appart from what happened inside the development team, a bunch of new super cool things have been developed by volunteers as well! Here's an overview of the new tools you need to try soon :)
[17:16:02] <Auregann_WMDE> Wikidata Image Positions, a tool by Lucas Werkmeister, showing the relative position of depicted elements within the images of items https://tools.wmflabs.org/wd-image-positions/item/Q1231009 (documentation: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/User:Lucas_Werkmeister/Wikidata_Image_Positions )

[17:16:12] <duesen> Looks like there is no UI to specify the globe. At least I don't see it. Maybe it was never added, I don't remember...
[17:16:19] <Auregann_WMDE> OpenRefine 3.1 beta is out, with many fixes and improvements to the Wikidata integration suggested by the community https://github.com/OpenRefine/OpenRefine/releases/tag/3.1-beta

[17:17:36] <Auregann_WMDE> If I forgot something important, now is the moment to mention it \o/
[17:18:40] <Auregann_WMDE> If not, I'll move to the next part, what happened outside of development :)
[17:18:49] <Auregann_WMDE> Again: so many things!
[17:18:58] <Auregann_WMDE> Since September, we got 2 new admins: Fuzheado, باسم Congratulations!
[17:19:08] <Auregann_WMDE> Plenty of Wikidata introductions, Wikidata workshops, etc. happened all around the world: thank you all for your involvement <3
[17:19:22] <Auregann_WMDE> Many local or global conferences happened, and Wikidata was praised in a lot of them, or even the main topic or the event: International Semantic Web Conference, FORCE 2018, WikiTechStorm, Wikimedia Technical Conference, International Data Week, GLAMwiki conference, Museum Computer Network conference, SWAT4HCLS, SWIB18, 35C3, GNDCon...
[17:19:35] <Auregann_WMDE> Here's a few more examples:
[17:19:44] <Auregann_WMDE> WikiCon 2018 of the German-speaking Wikimedia community, with keynote Wikidata as a Semantic Web game changer https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikicon2018_sarasua_keynote_05102018.pdf

[17:20:35] <Auregann_WMDE> WikiCite hosted a lot of discussions about Wikidata and citations https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiCite_2018/Program
[17:20:43] <Auregann_WMDE> Wikidata was definitely the star of the GLAMWiki conference. List of all the Wikidata-related talks and videos: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Status_updates/2018_11_26#Press,_articles,_blog_posts,_videos
[17:21:05] <Auregann_WMDE> A new academic course featuring Wikidata opened on October 15th at Tel Aviv University. The course is called "From Web 2.0 to Web 3.0, from Wikipedia to Wikidata" and is led by educator & Wikimedian Shani Evenstein - congratulations!

[17:21:41] <Auregann_WMDE> You can still help ORES to be smarter in detecting vandalism. Take a few minutes to check some edits https://labels.wmflabs.org/ui/wikidatawiki/
[17:21:51] <Auregann_WMDE> The Community Wishlist Survey was run by the WMF, a lot of interesting submissions about Wikidata https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Wishlist_Survey_2019
[17:22:01] <nikki> duesen: it's never been possible to enter the globe, there's https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T56097 for that, but if you add P376 to the item, a bot will fix the coordinates
[17:22:20] <Auregann_WMDE> And one more achievement: there are now over 2 million Wikidata infoboxes on Commons! https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Uses_of_Wikidata_Infobox
[17:22:41] <duesen> nikki: yea, i remember that we didn't have ui for it, i hoped that was fixed at some point. or at least there was syntax for it. but apparently not.
[17:22:55] <duesen> The moon landing is actually tagged with the wrong globe, Q2.
[17:23:11] <Auregann_WMDE> (advertisment break: read the Weekly Summary! It's good for your skin!)
[17:23:48] <Auregann_WMDE> Alright, now let's go to the section that will fill your to-read list

[17:24:33] <duesen> nikki: in the case of the moon landing, there is no place for P376, since the coordinate is itself a qualifier to the "splashdown" event.

[17:25:26] <duesen> the landing is actually missing
[17:25:46] <Auregann_WMDE> Alright that's enough for you for the next 3 months before the next IRC meeting :p
[17:25:59] <Auregann_WMDE> Now let's go back to the present: what's happening these days on Wikidata?
[17:26:51] <nikki> duesen: I meant as a separate statement... I don't know if the bot looks at qualifiers (and for anything more complicated like multiple globes, you'd probably need a custom bot or manual api requests to fix it)
[17:27:33] <Lydia_WMDE> There is currently a discussion around behavioural norms at https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Behavior_norms going on. The idea behind it being that Wikidata is an amazing community but we need to take some steps to ensure it stays that way in the future as well as we are growing.
[17:28:07] <Lydia_WMDE> There is also a proposal for a policy around autobuigraphies at https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Autobiography that could use your input
[17:28:43] <Lydia_WMDE> And last but not least if you are one of the people who want to add new languages to the ones that are supported by Wikidata then please chime in at https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Identify_problems_with_adding_new_languages_into_Wikidata
[17:29:03] <Lydia_WMDE> Then let's look at what's coming:
[17:29:37] <Lydia_WMDE> We published the current development plan at https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Development_plan to give you an overview of what we want to do in 2019
[17:29:55] <Lydia_WMDE> Over the year this will be adapted but it's the best guess plan we have right now
[17:30:46] <Lydia_WMDE> The next things that are coming are better support for other languages in the termbox on mobile, support for shape expressions and then editing Wikidata from Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects.
[17:30:59] <Lydia_WMDE> And then there are a few cool events coming up:
[17:31:16] <Lydia_WMDE> There is going to be a meetup in WikiBär, Berlin, January 15th (in German): https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Events/Berlin/2019-01-15
[17:31:39] <Lydia_WMDE> And there will be an academic workshop on data quality management in Wikidata, Berlin, January 18th (registration needed) https://fardamariam.wixsite.com/wikidatadqworkshop
[17:32:04] <Lydia_WMDE> The Wikimedia hackathon in Prague is currently open for registration as well: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Hackathon_2019/Register_and_Attend
[17:32:17] <Lydia_WMDE> And as usual, please add your events on Wikidata:Events! That helps us to know about them and advertise them :)
[17:33:01] <Auregann_WMDE> (advertisement break: You're Looking For A Good Resolution For 2019? Start Contributing To The Weekly Summary! Results Expected in Less Than Three Weeks!)
[17:33:25] <Auregann_WMDE> Alright, we're done talking, now it's time for you and your questions :)
[17:35:07] <Auregann_WMDE> If there's anything you'd like to ask to the team about development, the plan for 2019, etc. feel free to ask :)
[17:36:21] <Lydia_WMDE> Ok then I have a question :D
[17:36:30] <Lydia_WMDE> What are you looking forward to around Wikidata in 2019?
[17:39:27] <Auregann_WMDE> I'm looking forward to see the first steps of editing Wikidata from Wikipedia! it's been on the table for such a long time and now it will finally become real
[17:39:45] <Auregann_WMDE> And I'm of course looking forward to the WikidataCon :)
[17:39:58] <Lydia_WMDE> Yay :)
[17:40:17] <Lydia_WMDE> Alright if no-one has any easy or hard questions for us I think we can wrap up :D
[17:41:22] <Auregann_WMDE> Alright, thanks for attending and see you later :)
