Wikidata Leveling Up Days, April 2024

There are many ways you can contribute to this event, help newcomers to get around Wikidata and make the contents accessible to your language community! Feel free to have a look at the tasks below, and don't hesitate to contact Lea Lacroix (WMDE) if you have any questions or suggestions (lea.lacroix_ext@wikimedia.de or @Auregann on Telegram).

Translate the video captions

Most of the sessions will be available in advance as videos on Commons and Youtube, so people can watch them at their own pace. All videos are in English with English captions provided. It would be immensely useful if you could contribute to make these materials more accessible by translating the captions from English to your language(s) on Wikimedia Commons.

Most videos and English captions are available in the Commons category Wikidata Leveling Up Days 2024 videos. For each video, here's how you can translate English captions to another language:

  1. Go to the file's page on desktop version
  2. Click on the "TimedText" tab (next to "File" and "Discussion")
  3. Pick "en - English" and click on "Go"
  4. On the page, the source file of English captions are displayed. Copy/paste the content to a text file on your computer, save it in order to avoid loosing your work.
  5. In this local file, replace the English content by your language (keep the formatting and time codes identical)
  6. Once your file is ready, go back to the TimedText page of the video, and this time, pick your own language, then "Go"
  7. In the field, paste the content of your translated file, and publish
  8. Check the video file to see if captions appear correctly

Many thanks in advance for your help!

Unfortunately, Youtube doesn't accept community-translated captions anymore, but if you completed captions for your language on Commons, feel free to ping Lea Lacroix (WMDE) so we can manually upload the caption files to the videos.

Run a self-organized session in the program

On April 5-7 and 12-14 between 15:00 and 21:00 UTC, the schedule will include sessions ran by Wikimedia Deutschland, together with many speakers from the Wikidata community. The rest of the schedule is open to self-organized sessions, and we encourage you to prepare and run presentations and discussions for your community and in languages other than English!

How to schedule a session?
The schedule is open, any slot that is not booked yet can be reserved for a session. As soon as you are ready, you can edit the Program table to create a new line and add your session. Don't forget to add a title, a description, the time and date in UTC, and the language of your session.
What kind of session could it be?
The Wikidata Leveling Up Days is an event targeted at newcomers and people who want to increase their knowledge about Wikidata and related tools. Therefore, presentations and discussions should be accessible to newcomers without prerequisite knowledge. We suggest formats like introduction to a specific tool, workshops, editing together, and discussions. If you're looking for inspiration, here are the 6 topics we envisioned for the event:
  • Get started with Wikidata
  • Browse and query Wikidata's data
  • Enhance your editing experience
  • Ensure data quality
  • Connect Wikidata with sister projects
  • Share and connect
Languages
We are welcoming sessions in languages other than English - you can simply indicate the language in the program, and write down the title and description of the session directly in the target language.
Your session is self-organized
The Jitsi room dedicated to the event will be available at any time when there's no other session running (the organizer needs to be logged in on Jitsi to open the room). Léa Lacroix and other Wikimedia Deutschland staff will not supervise the sessions and will not necessarily be present. The session proposer needs to organise the presentation, facilitation and notes on their own. No recording provided, feel free to organize your own.

Help answer questions

There are two ways experienced editors can support newcomers by answering their questions:

  • Join the sessions called "Wikidata Clinic", live on Jitsi, and contribute to the answers to people's questions;
  • Join the Wikidata Help Telegram group to answer questions in a written form and asynchronously.
