The archival materials of the past provide us with insights to retrace historical, social, literary, linguistic, and cultural phenomena. This information is largely relational- where individuals were affiliated to organizations, lived and traveled to specific places, with written or photographic evidence of their activities through say editors and writers publications, census, correspondence, diaries and so on. Thus it comes as no surprise that the Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums (GLAM) sector and humanities researchers are increasingly turning to modeling this interrelated information as Linked Open Data for archiving, storing, and maximizing its reuse.
The Wikimedia ecosystem, and Wikidata as an infrastructure in particular, is seen as a gold standard for not only modeling this information, but also sharing it both openly or in a closed Wikibase, as it provides an open source infrastructure for modeling data, as well as for querying information to draw insights.
About the Ghent University Wikidata and Wikibase Workshop edit
In this 3 day workshop at UGent we seek to bring together small project teams from the GLAM sector and the Digital Humanities to develop their own Wikibase instance from a pre-existing data source or database, in an effort to take advantage of these affordances in telling the narratives around their cultural heritage data.
During these three days you will learn to make your data come alive through the use of Wikidata; learning to install a Wikibase, model Wikidata, make your Wikibase - prepare and upload data, use your Wikibase from developing a narrative to analysis. No prior knowledge of Wikidata is needed, although some familiarity with data and modeling data would be helpful. Knowledge of programming is a “nice to have”, but is certainly not necessary.
Workshop attendance is based on the submission and acceptance of a proposal that shows significant promise for realizing a Wikibase over the 3 days. We are accepting proposals from teams that intend to get “dirty with their data and in Wikidata and Wikibase” over the three days, ensuring a high motivation and curiosity for modeling your data in a Wikibase, to ensure a productive discussion across the accepted teams and to further the data modeling and potential impact of the projects for developers, users, and stakeholders of the data. A maximum of 5 teams will be submitted to the Workshop.
The content of the workshop will be given by Micelio, with the support of the Ghent Centre for Digital Humanities, WeChangEd ERC project, Wikimedia Deutschland, Science Stories, and the IDLab.
The only costs related to this workshop are the catering for lunches, coffees and social events to close the first two days between the hours of 09:00 - 17:00. These costs will be kept to a minimum, and will not be more than 25 euros per individual in total for the full 3 days. The final cost will be confirmed upon confirmation of acceptance and can be paid in cash on site.
