Message from the Wikidata development team edit

Today is Wikidata’s 9th birthday and it is time to celebrate!

It’s been another weird and crazy year. I hope that Wikidata has been and continues to be a place where you feel you are making a positive impact together with other people. While they can’t replace meeting you all face-to-face, it was great to be able to get together at online events like Wikimania, 30 Lexic-o-days and the Data Quality Days.

Over the past year, Wikidata has grown. We have passed 1.5 Billion edits on 95 Million Items and our community has grown to about 11500 active editors, who make Wikidata work. <3

Making our data more accessible and useful has been a big theme of the last year. The Query Builder for example makes querying Wikidata accessible to many more people without requiring knowledge of SPARQL. Keeping data quality high has been a focus of the Data Quality Days and has become easier with tools like the Item Quality Evaluator, Constraint Violations Checker and more powerful Constraints. Lexicographical data has seen a boost with a lot of new data, selecting Hausa, Igbo, Malayalam, Bengali and Dagbani as focus languages and coming together for 30 Lexic-o-days. And of course, we have struggled with the popularity of the Query Service and worked towards improving the situation. All of this has resulted in many great new applications, services and more that are being built on top of Wikidata’s data. There are too many to name them all here but some highlights include Govdirectory, Face the Facts, Painted Planet, Planthumanities lab and ADIMA.

There are a few exciting things taking more and more shape around us now: The Wikibase Ecosystem keeps growing and we will strengthen our place as a hub within it. Abstract Wikipedia will continue to develop and rely on Wikidata’s data to provide content in many languages. We will also continue to build tools and set up processes that help us all to ensure our data is useful, equitable and accessible. I am very much looking forward to the year ahead of us.

Happy Birthday, Wikidata! Here’s to many more years to come.

Lydia, for the development team

Further birthday greetings edit

Happy Birthday, Wikidata. Thanks for all of your success in the past nine years, and much success in the tenth year of Wikidata.

Of course, my present is only small, no tool etc. The only thing which Wikivoyage and I can do is using Wikidata extensively to improve Wikivoyage. And we did it from the very beginning of Wikidata. It does not only mean to use infoboxes and coordinates which were used already in about 95 percent of all articles. In future, the main use is the support of the description of locations like museums, restaurants, and hotels. The vCard or listing template developed at the German Wikivoyage is now able to read about 40 arguments like (language-dependent) urls, opening hour sets, and so on from Wikidata. Normally, it is impossible to do this with Wikidata, because the template is called up to 350 times per article which takes a lot of computing time. After a five-years work I added a complete Wikidata support in this year — of course using a big magic bag, and we made this template available at the Spanish Wikivoyage in this year, too. Therefore, the Spanish Wikivoyage is an example how small communities can benefit from data provided by bigger communities.

Another extraordinary use is the support of Kartographer maps adding missing or travel-related structures like itineraries, public transport or coral reefs, where Wikidata is used to connect Wikivoyage with Wikimedia Commons or OpenStreetMap.

Of course, there are ideas to improve Wikidata: the Wikibase Lua package should be become faster, and we need an easy-to-use interface for the manual entry of data by unexperienced authors, maybe directly on the article pages. --RolandUnger (talk) 11:27, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
