Motivation

edit

To enable classifying pieces of Iranian music based on their musical characteristic of Dastgah.

For those unfamiliar with Iranian music, please note that Dastgah is not the same as genre, nor is it the same as musical scale or mode. It is a distinct concept that overlaps with the aforementioned, but is more expansive. Huji (talk) 03:25, 28 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion

edit
I don't think creating an exclusive property for Dastgah is a good idea. Other cultures have identical counterparts, like ragas, maqam, etc. Probably most of them are listed here: en:Melody type#Melodic formulae and melody types in monodic traditions around the world or here en:Mode (music)#Analogues in different musical traditions. This source compares Arabic maqams with Iranian dastgahs, saying some of them are identical and also saying that one of them is very close to Western classical "major" scale. The examples from en:Dastgah#The Seven Dastgahs and en:Mode (music) are also quite similar. However, I think 'mode' is more of a term associated with Western classical music only? (and we don't have "musical mode" property yet). While I guess dastgah is rather a system based on tonality, mode and melody at the same time?
So if we are going to create something like this, we probably need to extend it to a universal use for all these types (possibly including Western modes), but I'm not sure what name it should have. "modal system" would means the whole system, while there are a bunch of types within such systems, so maybe "modal form" or something else? Solidest (talk) 17:47, 28 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
