Task/s: Add social media followers (P8687) statements for Baidu Tieba name (P11196)
Code: This bot uses a private database that I'm not sure if I have secured properly, so, all rights reserved
Function details: Baidu Tieba (Q837827) is a major online forum in China with over 20 billion threads, more than the number of triples on Wikidata. The number of subscribers there can represent how popular a topic is in China, which could be different from what is popular in the rest of the world. What's more China has even banned publishing the list of most popular artists in China.
I'm going to publish the number of subscribers and number of threads on Baidu Tieba (Q837827). I'll use the recommended update frequency of 1 year, since Wikipedia isn't using the newly created Baidu Tieba name (P11196) right now. I can also update when a milestone is reached, for example when Li Yi Bar (Q59174576) reaches 1 billion threads (992 million so far). An example looks like this Li Yi Bar (Q59174576). I'm not using this bot because I haven't set it up to upload this data.
I'm using a full page load with an actual browser to collect the data, which is already being stored in my private database. Not every forum will make it to Wikidata, only those already linked to Wikidata will recieve updates. History data could be uploaded to Wikidata when a forum is linked to Wikidata, though.
As Baidu Tieba name (P11196) has not been added for many items, I also created a new mixnmatch catalog, and will use this bot to add links, which looks like this. --Midleading (talk) 16:13, 3 March 2023 (UTC)
- having a statement social media followers (P8687) on items like Beijing (Q956) seems wrong to me. these aren't subscribers to Beijing (Q956) but to a forum about that. Right? BrokenSegue (talk) 18:54, 3 March 2023 (UTC)

- It makes sense to say "this person has this many followers on X platform" does it make sense to say "Beijing" has this many followers? Like in what sense is that forum "official" for Beijing? The twitter account is official. BrokenSegue (talk) 00:59, 4 March 2023 (UTC)
- social media followers (P8687) doesn't mention the social media has to be official. And people shouldn't use this property without specifying which platform. I'm interpreting social media followers (P8687) as "the social media identified with the external identifier X, which is linked to the subject, has the following number of subscribers". There's no reason you can't expect any social media followers (P8687) statement on an item, but if you correctly filter for a platform and/or other criterion you still get what you want. For this particular platform users should already know that it is a forum, and anybody can post messages on it. In fact not even the forums about a person are official, and the actual content on the forum are user generated which can be about something else.
