Wikidata:10. Geburtstag/Feierlichkeitenvideo
Collaborative celebration video - watch on Youtube or Commons, captions available in several languages
In October 2022, we will celebrate the 10th anniversary of Wikidata together! For this special occasion, we are creating a collaborative video that will show people from all around the world celebrating Wikidata’s birthday, sharing wishes and appreciation to the Wikidata community, and why they like Wikidata.
Beteiligungsmöglichkeiten
We are collecting footage to edit in the final Wikidata birthday video, which will be about 3 minutes long. We would love to receive videos from plenty of people from the Wikidata community to create a nice visual effect and a sense of group and connection.
In order to participate, you simply need to:
- shoot one or several videos of yourself and/or your community
- upload it through this form before September 18th (see further instructions below)
You can do it on your own or together with your local Wikidata community. You can take the opportunity of an upcoming onsite event (for example, a Wikimania gathering) to record something with more people.
You don’t need professional equipment: you can record the video with your smartphone. See the technical requirements and tips in the section below for more information.
You don’t need to cut, edit or make any changes to the videos: just send us the raw footage and we will take some parts of it to add it to the final videos.
Inhalt
You are free to decide what you want to record and say. Ideally, we would love to see these elements in the video:
- Sag "Herzlichen Glückwunsch Wikidata!" in deiner Sprache
- Create a little party/birthday scene (for example blowing candles, or anything else you do in your culture to celebrate a birthday)
- Wozu ist Wikidata nützlich?
- Was schätzen Sie am meisten an der Wikidata-Gemeinschaft?
Darüber hinaus können Sie sich eine oder mehrere dieser Ideen aussuchen:
- Erzählen Sie eine kurze Geschichte, wie Sie Wikidata entdeckt haben und/oder wie Sie Ihre erste Bearbeitung vorgenommen haben
- Was ist das Spannendste an der Mitarbeit bei Wikidata?
- Wie hat die Arbeit an Wikidata Sie persönlich bereichert oder beeinflusst?
- Wie würden Sie die Wikidata-Gemeinschaft beschreiben?
- Was ist das Besondere an der Wikidata-Gemeinschaft?
- Sagen Sie der Wikidata-Gemeinschaft mit ein paar Worten "Danke"
- Was halten Sie von Daten und verknüpften Daten im Allgemeinen?
- Was ist das Spannendste an Open-Data?
- Filmen Sie Veranstaltungen/Treffen/Aktivitäten von Mitgliedern Ihrer Gemeinschaft
- Filmen Sie sich neben einer Landschaft oder einem Denkmal Ihrer Stadt/Region
- Nennen Sie ein Beispiel für einen positiven Einfluss, den Wikidata in Zukunft auf die Welt haben könnte
- Was wünschen Sie sich für die Zukunft von Wikidata?
Because we have a limited time to process the videos, we kindly ask you to speak in English in the video. Saying “happy birthday” in other languages is welcome.
You are very welcome to include other people in the video, such as other community members or people around you, but you need to make sure that they consent to be on the video. Please avoid filming strangers, people in a crowd, and please don’t film children.
We would like to encourage you to highlight elements of your region or culture that you would like to share with others: landscape, architecture, arts, etc. You are also welcome to set up a little scene with birthday elements: a Wikidata birthday cake, a costume…
Please do not use background music and make sure that there is no sound or images that would result in a copyright infringement or could not be shared under a free licence.
Nutzung der Inhalte
Please note that we are going to edit the raw footage that you send us, and keep only short bits of it for the final video. We may not need all of the footage that we will receive, and your contribution may not appear in the final video.
By providing your footage, you consent to share it under the CC BY SA 4.0 licence, you understand that it can be reused by Wikimedia Deutschland and you accept that parts of your video are going to be added into the final Wikidata birthday video. The data you send (video, username, email address) will be processed by Wikimedia Deutschland and its legally contracted video producer, Anne Braun, according to Wikimedia Deutschland’s data privacy policy. Your email address will not be made public.
The final video (possibly containing bits of your footage) will be uploaded by Wikimedia Deutschland under the free licence CC BY-SA 4.0. on Wikimedia Deutschland’s Youtube channel and on Wikimedia Commons. The username you entered when uploading your video will appear publicly in the credits of the final video.
Technische Voraussetzungen
You can upload the raw footage directly from your device (e.g. smartphone) in native compression. You can work with the webcam of your laptop or screen recording as well.

- Maximale Dauer eines einzelnen Clips: 10 Minuten
- Maximale Dateigröße eines einzelnen Clips: 10 GigaByte
- Frame Rate: 30fps, 60fps (high frame rate for slow motion possible 100/120fps)
- Aspect Ratio: landscape or portrait format (16:9, 9:16)
- Resolution: 1920 x 1080 (also welcome: 1280 x 720 up to 4096 x 2160 (4K) )
- Video Container: .mov, .mp4
- Video Codec: h264
- Audio Codec: AAC-LC (Stereo, 48kHz)
Please do not compress or archive the file (in .zip or other formats) before uploading it.

Tipps für die Aufnahme eines Videos
Picture is important but doesn’t have to be perfect. No one expects you to have a professional studio at home. If you have a good camera or a solid external webcam, that’s more than sufficient. Even if you only have a built-in webcam or just your phone, it’s fine too. Rather than how expensive a device is, here are the really important things you should think about:
- The camera should be stable at eye-level
- Tutorial:How to build a smartphone tripod
- Use some books to bring the camera eye-level
- The camera should frame your face like a portrait framing (head to chest)
- The lighting should be soft and hit you from a frontal direction
- Natural light is nice, but avoid direct sunlight to your face
- Avoid backlighting, and place extra lamps behind the camera to cast light on your face
- Avoid bumpy patterns in the background but also blank white walls
- Avoid white blown out highlights in the picture
Sound is crucial for a video for people to understand. Please check the following:
- Set up in a quiet surrounding, avoid background noise
- Close doors and windows
- If you can, use an external microphone
- Integrated microphones in USB webcams can be pretty good
- Make sure your microphone´s gain is set correctly and levels aren't too hot
Other tips & further advice:
- Watch your entire video before sending it to us
- You don´t have to edit the video, just upload the raw footage
- Don’t add any background music or jingles

Workshop: how to film with your smartphone
In order to help you record your video for Wikidata’s birthday, and to learn new skills about how to shoot professional-looking videos with your home equipment, we are happy to offer you the possibility to join a workshop. The workshops are free of charge. Joining a workshop is not mandatory to send a contribution for the video.
In this workshop, participants will gain basic knowledge and practical skills for designing and recording moving images with mobile devices (smartphone, tablet, laptop). You will learn basic principles about cinematic staging, moving image composition, lighting design and sound recording are conveyed and applied in practice.
There are two available dates for the workshop: Saturday, August 27th, from 06:00 to 10:00 UTC, and Saturday, September 3rd, from 15:00 to 19:00 UTC.
The content of the workshop is identical on both dates, you only need to join one of the two.
Registration for the workshops is now closed. If you registered, you received information about the access link via email.
The workshop will be adapted to participants' personal gear, like smartphones, tablets and laptop-cameras. As minimum requirements to join the workshop you need:
- smartphone (free up storage space upfront!)
- charger and cable (also for connecting to a computer)
- computer or laptop with webcam
- stabile internet connection
As additional equipment, it's nice to have:
- powerbank (charged)
- external microphone or headset for your device
- tripod with smartphone adapter, selfie stick
- LED videolight
