Disclaimer:

This page uses the word "Queer" in a reclaimed and academic sense.

These tests do not judge the quality or message of any media, and passing any of these tests does not automatically guarantee that the content is not problematic or offensive in its portrayal of the subjects, and vice versa.

The wording of some of the tests have also been modified to be useful in a global context and for most forms of media (Film, TV, Theater, Books, etc...).

No one test can replace a qualitative examination of a creative work. But each test opens up critical discussion, challenges and inspires creators, and provides another tool for measuring hidden biases.

Art and entertainment are always subjective and nuanced. Lets have fun with data!

Vito Russo Test edit

A Bechdel inspired test for media representation of LGBTQIA+ characters.

Criteria edit

1. at least one character that is identifiably LGBTQIA+,

(Lesbian, gay, bisexual/pansexual, transgender/transexual, queer/questioning, intersex, asexual, and/or other sexual/gender minorities)

2. not predominantly defined by their orientation/identity,

(They are comprised of the same sort of unique character traits commonly used to differentiate straight/non-transgender characters from one another, such as goals/dreams, jobs, skills, etc...)

3. impact the plot in such a way that their removal would have a significant effect

( They are not there to simply provide colorful commentary, paint urban authenticity, or (perhaps most commonly) set up a punchline. The character must matter.)
