Wikidata:WikiProject Olympics/reports/demonstration, exhibition, and inofficial discipline events
A lot of discipline events that were held during editions of modern Olympic Games are not considered official Olympic sports discipline events these days by sports historians and to some extent also the International Olympic Committee (Q40970). The perception about some of the discipline events has changed in the past, thus there is some sort of ambiguity possible in a couple of cases here. According to the available sources, at least three different types of non-official sports discipline events need to be distinguished:
- Demonstration sports; these discipline events have been carried out to demonstrate that the type of sport is ready for the Olympics. In many cases, the sport has later become an official Olympic sports discipline event. For the demonstration events, we use instance of (P31): Olympic demonstration sport competition (Q1123217) for the discipline event (instead of Olympic sports discipline event (Q26132862)). Demonstration sports were no longer included in the Olympic Games after 1992.
- Exhibition sports; held in only very few cases; there is no specific instance of (P31) value currently, thus we use Olympic demonstration sport competition (Q1123217) as for official demonstration events (might be changed in the future).
- Inofficial sports; most of these disciplines have never been considered official Olympic discipline events, but they were held at more or less the same time at more or less the same location as the Olympic Games; quite often, the actual Olympic status had not been well-defined when the events have actually taken place. Most of the "inofficial sports" have taken place before World War II when the Olympic Games were much less organized as nowadays. In same cases, however, the perception of the official status has been changed at a later time by sports historians, and somewhat by the IOC itself. We do not have a specific value for instance of (P31) currently and use Olympic demonstration sport competition (Q1123217) as for official demonstration events, but this will definitely be changed in the future.
Items of all three types shall have the same structure and links as those with instance of (P31): Olympic sports discipline event (Q26132862), i.e. the official Olympic sports disciplines. For sporting events linked to them, we currently use Olympic sporting event (Q18536594) as value for instance of (P31), but that might change in the future as well.
This page aims to monitor discipline events that are not considered official as of today.
