Scope of Work edit

The Yale University Library (YUL) PCC Wikidata Pilot Project task force will focus on two proposed projects: managing citation identities in Wikidata, and cataloging events in Wikidata. Both of these projects have the potential to support cross-collection discovery. Citation entities (representing bibliographies, catalogs, and reference sources) appear in metadata for both library and museum objects. Developing a uniform approach to identifier management for these entities may help support search and discovery interfaces in environments such as LUX, Yale’s new cross-collection discovery platform. For their part, event entities (representing a range of events, but especially exhibitions) have never been well represented in library cataloging practice, in contrast to that of museums. Again, a common approach and set of identifiers for this entity type could help create connections across Yale’s collections.

Project Outline edit

The project has defined two entity types to focus on in its work with Wikidata: citation entities and event entities. Citation entities are scoped to the Rare Books & Manuscripts Section's Standard Citation Forms (SCF) dataset. One possible focus of event entities is the set of exhibition events from the Yale Center for British Art catalog: there is overlap between this dataset and the Yale University Library catalog.

For each entity type, Wikidata items will be created to represent individual entities. Initially, the set of entities to be represented in Wikidata will be limited to those present in the YUL catalog. If this set is exhausted before the end of the project, then the scope may be expanded to include the complete set of possible entities (e.g., all entries in the SCF dataset).

  • The set of YUL entities will be identified and matched to the canonical source (e.g., the SCF dataset).
  • An application profile and/or mapping to Wikidata types and properties will need to be developed for each entity type.
  • Using the mapping for SCF entities, an initial set of Wikidata items will be bulk loaded to Wikidata.
  • Wikidata items will be reviewed, edited, or created by members of the Descriptive Team.
  • Reconciled entities will be updated in the YUL catalog, and corresponding Wikidata URIs will be added to YUL catalog records.
