Wikidata:WikidataCon 2017/Notes/Expanding classical Wikimedia outreach efforts to include Wikidata

Abstract

edit

This talk is a merger of two submissions (3 & 19 ), whose abstracts are pasted below and that will be discussed from the perspective of both being exemplary ways in which classical Wikimedia outreach efforts can be expanded to include Wikidata:

  1. The Wikimedian in Residence model started a bit before the actual development work on Wikidata. Consequently, Wikidata played no role in early residencies, but this is gradually changing, to the point that Wikidata-related activities are forming a central part of some more recent residencies. In this session, we will explore this shift and highlight areas in which Wikidata-focused residencies differ from more traditional ones focused on older Wikimedia projects.
  2. Editing contests have a long tradition in multiple Wikimedia contexts, from Wikipedia articles to Commons files. Not so in the context of Wikidata. Can we do something about this? Should we? Based on experiences with WikiProject Computational Biology's ISCB competition that started out on the English Wikipedia and has since broadened to include other Wikipedia languages and Wikidata, I will explore some of the challenges in Wikidata-centric editing contests, along with thoughts on how they could be addressed.
