Wikidata talk:Property proposal/text alt

What do you propose

edit

@Pigsonthewing, ChristianKl, Graham87: as you oppose the alt text, what do you suggest instead to make media accessible? Cdlt, VIGNERON (talk) 13:02, 24 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

@VIGNERON: I don't believe there's anything that can be done on Wikidata's end to make media more accessible for people like me. It'd have to be left to local projects. Graham87 (talk) 14:39, 24 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Graham87: That's sad, and I fear it will be worst and nearly impossible to deal locally for the alt text. One day, most of infoboxes and templates will import the media and his legend from Wikidata (with all other informations), so the alt attribute will be « alone » on the local project and worst case scenario, if someone change the file (and the legend) on Wikidata it will probably go unnoticed on the local project. Is there really nothing that can be done? Cdlt, VIGNERON (talk) 15:12, 24 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
@VIGNERON: Unfortunately not. Graham87 (talk) 15:29, 24 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Graham87: sorry but I've got one last question as I don't understand the context problem. In the example given on the proposal, how is [[File:Al Grey (Gottlieb).jpg|thumb|alt=Black and white photography of a smiling black man with a white hat and a dark jacket holding a trombone in front of him with his both hands with wood wall behind.|[[:w:en:Al Grey|Al Grey]] by William P. Gottlieb (1980s)]] not appropriate for both "Pith helmet", "Trombone", "Al Grey" or "William P. Gottlieb" Wikipedia articles? and what would be an appopriate alt then? Cdlt, VIGNERON (talk) 16:29, 24 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
@VIGNERON: Because some of that alt text is irrelevant to those articles. For trombone, the alt text "A man holding a trombone" would be fine; for "Pith helmet", the focus should be on the hat. Graham87 (talk) 05:33, 25 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Graham87: ok, but is a too long text really inappropriate? I fail to understand why you prefer no information at all more than too much information... (especially when the photo will probably be mostly used on the linked articles so the context is not totally fuzzy). Cdlt, VIGNERON (talk) 08:01, 25 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
@VIGNERON: It would be difficult for screen reader users to get to the relevant information when its buried in a sea of text that's irrelevant to, say, the trombone article. Graham87 (talk) 09:48, 25 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
