Wikidata Eleventh Birthday - India Datathon edit

Greetings Daniel Mietchen!

As part of Wikidata's 11th birthday celebration a 11 days long datathon is planned from October 26, 2023 00:00 to November 5, 2023, 23:59 (both times Indian Standard Time) to improve the India related data in Wikidata. The data-thon aims to enhance Wikidata items by incorporating labels and descriptions in your native language, along with the addition of references, qualifiers, and statements. Additionally, it encourages the utilization of India-related properties within these items, ultimately contributing to the improvement of structured data in Wikidata.

Please have a look at the event page and and join the datathon by adding your name in the participant's section at here.

Nam Keun Kim edit

Hi Daniel,

I suspect that some the publications of Nam Keun Kim (Q39847503) could be Jeongyong Lee (Q92017447)'s in fact.--Tadarrius Bean (talk) 16:27, 16 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Tadarrius Bean: Thanks for noticing the issue and letting me know about it. I fixed the relevant Wikidata statements — see here for details. --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 22:36, 16 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

item label errors edit

@Daniel Mietchen: Are these item label errors avoidable? --Tagishsimon (talk) 05:59, 19 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Tagishsimon: Thanks for checking. I currently don't have a way of avoiding these tag issues and usually fix them afterwards. --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 21:00, 19 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Invitation to participate in the WQT UI requirements elicitation online workshop edit

Dear Daniel_Mietchen,

I hope you are doing well,

We are a group of researchers from King’s College London working on developing WQT (Wikidata Quality Toolkit), which will support a diverse set of editors in curating and validating Wikidata content. We are inviting you to participate in an online workshop aimed at understanding the requirements for designing effective and easy-to-use user interfaces (UI) for three tools within WQT that can support the daily activities of Wikidata editors: recommending items to edit based on their personal preferences, finding items that need better references, and generating entity schemas automatically for better item quality.

The main activity during this workshop will be UI mockup sketching. To facilitate this, we encourage you to attend the workshop using a tablet or laptop with PowerPoint installed or any other drawing tools you prefer. This will allow for a more interactive and productive session as we delve into the UI mockup sketching activities.

Participation is completely voluntary. You should only take part if you want to and choosing not to take part will not disadvantage you in any way. However, your cooperation will be valuable for the WQT design. Please note that all data and responses collected during the workshop will be used solely for the purpose of improving the WQT and understanding editor requirements. We will analyze the results in an anonymized form, ensuring your privacy is protected. Personal information will be kept confidential and will be deleted once it has served its purpose in this research.

The online workshop, which will be held on April 5th, should take no more than 3 hours.

If you agree to participate in this workshop, please either contact me at kholoud.alghamdi@kcl.ac.uk or use this form to register your interest https://forms.office.com/e/9mrE8rXZVg Then, I will contact you with all the instructions for the workshop.

For more information about my project, please read this page: https://king-s-knowledge-graph-lab.github.io/WikidataQualityToolkit/

If you have further questions or require more information, don't hesitate to contact me at the email address mentioned above.

Thank you for considering taking part in this project.

Regards Kholoudsaa (talk) 02:54, 22 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Kholoudsaa: Thanks. Done. --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 10:56, 22 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Editing too fast without bot flag edit

Hi. You're editing too fast without a bot flag with Research Bot. The bot has the bot rights, but you're not attaching the bot flag to the edits (with bot=1 or bot: true, depending on the environment), flooding RecentChanges. Nirmos (talk) 02:48, 4 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Nirmos: Thanks for thinking along. The vast majority of the bot's edits are made via QuickStatements, for which I can neither control the edit speed nor set an edit-level bot flag. What do you suggest in this situation? --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 23:01, 4 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Adding Mongolian to description edit

Hello, I saw that a bot you created added the Mongolian term "эрдэмтэн" to my description on Wikidata. As far as I can tell this term means "scientist." (You can see it listed as a translation of "scientist" on the Wikidata page for Scientist.)

While I am an academic, I am far from any sort of scientist (though I am also not fluent in Mongolian!). How are you/your bot deciding which people to add this descriptor to? Thanks! Thematthewmurray (talk) 03:46, 30 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Thematthewmurray: The term is closer to "scholar", "learned person" or "researcher" and not limited to those engaged in natural sciences. --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 17:14, 30 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Duplicates for Zoosystematica Rossica edit

Hi @Daniel Mietchen, I've noticed that User:Research Bot is creating duplicates of existing articles for Zoosystematica Rossica (Q18649566). I think there are 40-50 cases of articles prior to 2007 where the article already has an item in Wikidata (because I added it), but without a DOI. When I added those articles they didn't have one. Now many of them do, and ResearchBot has added some without first checking if they already exist(!).

I don't know how you check for duplicates, but I've learnt from experience that it's not enough to assume that if the DOI isn't in Wikidata that means that there is no item for that DOI. Any chance you can merge these newer items with the existing ones? I did a couple by hand but it's tedious. Rdmpage (talk) 12:57, 20 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Rdmpage: Thanks for the note — I'm on it. --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 19:14, 20 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Rdmpage: I'm done with the merges for now. Noticed a few things on the way: (i) the dates rarely agree — this probably needs some more cleanup; (ii) your Q107057509 was a duplicate of your Two new species of cave crickets of the genus Eremogryllodes (Orthoptera: Myrmecophilidae: Bothriophylacinae) from Iran (Q104465575), (iii) your Q116677031 was a duplicate of the bot's A description of Dendronotus shpataki sp. nov. (Gastropoda: Nudibranchia) from the Sea of Japan: a contribution of citizen science to marine zoology (Q114293958). A test merge via QuickStatements was incomplete, so I did the rest by hand. Do you have plans to fill in the missing DOIs? I normally work by topic rather than journal. --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 20:12, 20 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
