Q31880189 and Q48614307 edit

Both items are about a swamp in NL and DE. Original both items used the name/title in the corresponding language.  – The preceding unsigned comment was added by Pdreijnders (talk • contribs) at 18:06, 16 March 2024 (UTC).Reply

Hey @Pdreijnders: Since there are 3 different protected areas (Amtsvenn - Hündfelder Moor (Q481383), Amtsvenn und Hündfelder Moor (Q48613795), Aamsveen (Q48614307)) that cover the Amtsvenn (Q31880189) swamp, it is better to keep the entities separate. The 3 protected areas are listed under located in protected area (P3018) in the swamp item, and I added located in/on physical feature (P706)Amtsvenn (Q31880189) staments to the protected areas to indicate that they are located at the Amtsvenn swamp. Samoasambia 22:15, 24 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Ok, I see your point. But then the items are not fully correct. In the "living world" there is one swamp called Aamsveen (in Dutch) / Amstvenn (in German). This area happens to reside in two countries. So in the "administrative world" there is for the Dutch the protected area (NL2003001) and for German one (not two) protected area (DE3807301). Q956859 and Q2048766 edit

Although the Dutch Wikipedia has two articles it is the same concept. (pinging User:Mbch331) --TadejM (talk) 14:06, 19 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Yes, but as long as there are 2 articles on the Dutch Wikipedia, there need to be 2 items. Otherwise you're creating unconnected pages. First you need to convince the local community to merge the pages, then the items can be merged. If there remain 2 articles, then there will remain 2 items. Mbch331 (talk) 14:12, 19 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
I'm sorry; I don't speak Dutch though and I am not involved in the local community. Why are you projecting your local issues onto Wikidata? --TadejM (talk) 14:13, 19 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Because you want to merge items and as per policy, when there's a sitelink conflict, there is a different way to handle. See Help:Merge#Items to be merged with sitelink conflicts. Mbch331 (talk) 14:17, 19 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Why are you quoting this as a policy? It is clearly marked as a proposal. There should only be one item for each concept as otherwise it doubles (or triples etc.) the work required to maintain all these items and leads to inconsistencies. It is up to the Dutch Wikipedia community to clear their local duplicates. I don't find it reasonable to expect from users of Wikidata to come and resolve issues for them. --TadejM (talk) 14:24, 19 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Local communities are leading in what is to be 1 page and what is multiple pages. Every page has a right for a Wikidata item. If a local community thinks that 2 pages are needed to describe something people on Wikidata see as duplicates, you can't force the community to make it one page. For now the Dutch Wikipedia community has 2 pages and I happen to know, they are going to think about making a merge proposal. For now I've marked monolatrism (Q2048766) as a duplicate of monolatrism (Q956859). All statements have been moved to monolatrism (Q956859), so there is only 1 item to maintain. If and when the Dutch community decides to merge the items can be officially merged. Mbch331 (talk) 14:41, 19 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
What makes you think that 'Every [local] page has a right for a Wikidata item'? As far as I understand from Help:Sitelinks, each Wikimedia/Wikipedia page 'can [only] have' one sitelink to one Wikidata item page, which is not the same as claiming that it must have one. What I read is that 'typically items have at least one corresponding page on a Wikimedia site' and that 'Sitelinks are also useful for ensuring that items in Wikidata represent only one unique concept'. Linking to duplicates is not helpful in this regard.
Thanks for taking this up in the Dutch Wikipedia and marking the item as a duplicate here. I really don't think local issues should be resolved by Wikidata users as there may be several projects that need to merge their articles. Sitelinks can be added to Wikimedia sites in more than 200 languages (some of them barely having any community). I also don't think that the quality of Wikidata should be compromised due to issues in Wikipedia. On the contrary, Wikidata develops by itself and as such also provides a way of quality assurance for others. --TadejM (talk) 14:58, 19 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
What makes you think that 'Every [local] page has a right for a Wikidata item'? Per WD:N notability on Wikipedia implies notability on Wikidata. --Matěj Suchánek (talk) 08:17, 21 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
From another perspective, this is not a local issue, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Monolatry . Apart from the discussion about wiki policy/approach and theology, this is more about semantics. The previous merge on the EN wiki was semantically incorrect. The two separate Dutch articles approach (semantically) the reality more accurately. Pdreijnders (talk) 21:45, 28 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Q123986434 and Q15075612 edit

I am not sure about these two. Rare lastname, same firstname, same first letter of patronym, same deathyear, very few sources on one of them. I've added "different from", but I'm not sure about it. Podbrushkin (talk) 09:46, 22 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Podbrushkin, althouth the first letter of patronym is the same, the entire patronym is different, and different people are specified as their fathers, one is Q123986429, the other is Q123986004. Michgrig (talk) 11:49, 31 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Same topic. WikiOriginal-9 (talk) 19:42, 3 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi @WikiOriginal-9,
Are you sure these items are about the same person? There are different death dates - 1610 and 1624 and different occupations - non-fiction writer (Q15980158) and mathematician (Q170790) + physician (Q39631). Michgrig (talk) 07:59, 5 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
I think it's the same guy but different sources just have different death dates. At Q18757144, the "Oxford Dictionary of National Biography ID" (scroll down to read part of his snippet) has his death date as 1610? and it says "by 1597, he was working as a physician in Bury St Edmunds" while the "Dictionary of National Biography, 1885–1900" link has his death date as 1624 and also says "Before 1597 he was settled at Bury St. Edmunds as a physician" so looks like they're the same person. Q125310503 and Q125310506 edit

Q125310506 all caps version of Q125310503. No data on either Wikidata page, other than "researcher", which is vague but can be confirmed via Google. No Wikipedia entries linked for either individual. He's listed numerous times in citations on en Wikipedia, but I didn't find a page that mentioned him outside of the References section.

In short, I see no indication that Q125310503 and Q125310506 aren't the same person. OIM20 (talk) 18:18, 20 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Q57082046 and Q112435201 edit

Q112435201 links to Library of Congress ID 2010127275 which states that he graduated Wageningen Agricultural Univ with a Masters in Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, specializing in Tropical Forestry Ecology and Silivculture

Q57082046 links to ORCID 0000-0001-9579-0831 which also states that he graduated with an MSc in Forestry from Wageningen University and Research Centre.

A search on either university name leads to the WUR website.

The ORCID lists authorship on Atlas of the potential Vegetation of Ethiopia for 2010, which is also listed on ID Ref 148609570, and NUKAT linked on Q112435201.

There are more links and data on Q112435201; Q57082046 only links to the ORCID. OIM20 (talk) 18:43, 20 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Q90257752 and Q54372330 edit

Q54372330 - Jonathan E. M. Baillie is listed as one of the authors on A Global Deal For Nature: Guiding principles, milestones, and targets. If you click "Authors Info & Affiliations" a screen pops up on the right. If you click the ORCID symbol next to Jonathan E.M. Baillie it takes you to ORCID 0000-0002-4599-7524 which is the same ORCID listed on Q90257752. (It's private.)

Further, "A Global Deal For Nature" 's link to View All Articles by this Author shows "Forgotten Biodiversity in Desert Ecosystems", which is on Research Gate. Clicking on the name "Jonathan E M Baillie" in the list of 42 authors (he's last; you'll need to expand the list to see him) will take you to his RG profile which is linked on Q54372330.

These appear to be the same person. OIM20 (talk) 23:33, 20 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

The Devil On Two Sticks / The Devil Upon Two Sticks (5 entries) edit

Q110377963: The Devil on Two Sticks, penny blood seralization; Asmodeus, the devil on two sticks
Q110379717: The Devil on Two Sticks, penny blood edition; published by William Strange, 1840; Asmodeus, the devil on two sticks

All the information in the appears to match. The difference seems to be that Q110379717 lists the publisher while Q110377963 does not, but the info on both of them all matches to data from Price One Penny # 434. Both show publication date of 1840.

Then there The Devil Upon Two Sticks with the 1842 publication date:
Q110378486: Asmodeus, the devil on two sticks, penny blood edition; published by Willoughby and Co, 1842
Q110378488: Asmodeus, the devil on two sticks, penny blood edition; Illustrated standard edition

Information on these also pulls from the same Price One Penny # 434 reference.

And finally, the one with Wikipedia pages attached: Q3222271: The Devil upon Two Sticks, book by Alain-René Lesage; Asmodeus, The Lame Devil | Le Diable boiteux
This one shows the original publication date of 1707.

If different editions are meant to have their own Wikidata page, then I request that Q110377963 and Q110379717 be merged for the 1840 publication and that Q110378486 and Q110378488 be merged for the 1842 publication.

If there is meant to be one Wikimedia entry that encompasses all of the various editions, I would ask that all 5 entries be merged into Q3222271.

I apologize if I've misunderstood how the "add value" parameter works, as I thought that would be the method of adding different publication dates for the same literary work. OIM20 (talk) 20:21, 21 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
