What is this?
editWhat is a target? Danrok (talk) 00:23, 24 May 2013 (UTC)
It appears to have been added without much consensus Target.
I don't think it should be used for military operations, at least not to specify general locations as was suggested in the proposal - "For Battle of Stalingrad it'd be Stalingrad/Volgograd". Stalingrad cannot be described as a target of Battle of Stalingrad. Danrok (talk) 00:30, 24 May 2013 (UTC)
Extended sense
editI probably made a use of this property going beyond the original definition but that could make sense I think: Nuit debout (Q23725830) -> target (P533) -> El Khomri law (Q22986077) Or in a more generic way: a instance of social movement (Q49773) having for target an instance of law (Q7748) (or probably other political entities). Could this kind of use be accepted, or is there a more appropriate property for this use, or should we create one to keep target (P533) focused to military actions? What about murders?
editShouldn't target (P533) be used to indicate the victim(s) of a murder? For example, the only link between assassination of John F. Kennedy (Q193484) and John F. Kennedy (Q9696) is through the property facet of (P1269). I think we should use target (P533): assassination of John F. Kennedy (Q193484) -> target (P533) -> John F. Kennedy (Q9696) What do you think? Miniquark (talk)
Target of any opposition?
editWhen this property was created the documentation described that it should be used for the targets of violent military attacks. There currently is no property for other kinds of targets.
I just used this property to describe "targets" of protesting in Day of Action to Save Net Neutrality (Q30688937). For activism, we can say that the protestors attack some social issue and direct their petition to some target in the activism. In the case of this activism, the targets are a politician and a government department.
Should there be multiple "target" properties, one for military targets, one for the target of protests, and another for non-military conflicts? Blue Rasberry (talk) 16:39, 26 June 2017 (UTC)
- Here I am again with boycott of The Ingraham Angle (Q105090984), which is a boycott directing protest at a television show. Blue Rasberry (talk) 23:51, 27 January 2021 (UTC)
- in opposition to (P5004) seems to work. Blue Rasberry (talk) 00:10, 28 January 2021 (UTC)
- I have to agree. Either the scope of this property should be extended, or a new one made for targets of a non-military nature. The property has goal (P3712) can be used to express the aims of a political action in a more roundabout way, but it's a bit awkward to use if you only want to express the intended target of a political action.
