Commander William Riker eased forward, gently pushing aside a handful of the huge swamp weeds as he did so. Even this slight motion sent ripples through the dark green water and released bubbles that broke with noxious effect by his legs. (English)

“It’s preventative medicine,” Beverly explained. “She seemed to feel that a week in my isolation room just might give Mr. Worf time to calm down.” (English)

“The Preservers first came to Starfleet’s attention in 2302. Very little is known of the race, save that it apparently set itself the goal of seeding uninhabited worlds with small groups of people from threatened societies. Their motivations for this remain unknown. The first Preserver planet is now known by the designation Miramanee and was located by NCC 1701—the original Enterprise under the command of Captain James T. Kirk.” (English)

Musicians, I suppose.” He smiled wistfully. “I manage to hold my own with a flute.” This was the legacy of a particularly odd alien contact he had made. (English)

It was clearly the correct question. Kirsch grinned. “Two points, really. First of all, I could hardly believe that God would allow everyone in the world to be wiped out by the Black Death with the exception of just twelve villages. I mean, just because there were twelve tribes of Israel and twelve apostles doesn’t follow that twelve villages will be left of all the world, does it? We’re not even any better than the other places used to be. Besides, even if it were true, there would be ruins left, wouldn’t there? The Bible mentions a good deal more than twelve villages by name, and nobody has ever come up with a viable answer as to where even one of them might have been located.”So that was how the inhabitants of this world explained their origin! Picard had to admire the logic. (English)

“In the book of Revelations,” the student replied, “we are told that God will create a new heaven and a new Earth. And that there will be no more night. Well, there is no more night. And if this were a new Earth, then it would explain a great deal.” (English)

Kirsch thought it over and then nodded. “You know magic, being a creature of magic. I am a student of the sciences, and therefore untrained in magical lore.” Data allowed this statement to go unchallenged. It was, after all, merely an example of Clarke’s Law in action: Any sufficiently advanced technology will appear to be magic to outsiders. It was best to allow Kirsch to discover his own answers—however incorrect they might turn out to be. (English)

Throwing his arms into the air dramatically, he cried out: “ ‘By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes!’ ”Data twitched slightly. “Macbeth, Act Four, Scene One,” he murmured. The captain’s devotion to Shakespeare was well known aboard the ship—but the Bard was naturally unknown here. (English)

“My lord,” Kirsch said placatingly. “Lukas would not lie to you. He knows you would kill him if he did. Instead, I beseech you, recall the story of Lot and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. They were consumed in fire and brimstone, and only those who fled were spared.” (English)
