Outdated image

edit

Hello, I don't see where in Wikidata's interface one can leave a comment with one's changes, so I'll explain here why I removed an image.

It shouldn't be displayed in the infobox for two reasons: it's outdated (the logo used in the 2019 release of the game is different from the one on this concept poster that was made in 2015) ; and, as there is already an image displayed by default in the infobox (the game's logo), it piles up two pictures on top of each other in a way that doesn't make sense for the readership. Please stop adding it back in the infobox; writers can still add it in the body of the article if they so desire. Cheers, Alecto Chardon (talk) 12:33, 22 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Alecto Chardon: So, first of all, this problem is definitely not Wikidata-related. If you think that Wikipedia (specifically frwiki) should not display this image from Wikidata, then just put a hyphen next to the infobox parameter, just like I did, i.e. |image = -.
Secondly, the game cover is valid content for Wikidata and an outdated image (historical data) is in no way a valid reason to remove it from here. In order to indicate when an image started and stopped being used, we use the appropriate ranks and qualifiers (example), rather than unreasonably removing it as you did, see Special:Diff/1994507821, Special:Diff/1995149210.
In the third place: no one is adding it to the infobox, I repeat that this problem is not Wikidata related and should be solved locally (on frwiki) and no, the image here on Wikidata will be restored (see reason above).
Note: before you proceed with further editing on Wikidata, I first recommend that you familiarize yourself with Wikidata's policies and guidelines and please refrain from deleting valid statements from now on, as this approach is contrary to Wikidata's principles. My edit was unjustifiably reverted on frwiki by Chouette bougonne. Well, there's nothing more I can do here at this point. I tried to help, but apparently I was misunderstood. I have restored the image here, now please deal with the issue locally following my example with the hyphen (on frwiki) and refrain from deleting valid content here on Wikidata. Hey @Kirilloparma: Thanks for the tip about |image = -, though it sadly only serves as a bandage to an issue that shouldn't exist in the first place. Wikidata shouldn't bring in unilateral changes that affects WP pages and then expect the WP users to know how to deal with WD’s intricacies. From an UX perspective, it makes no sense that a field that is not even present in the target infobox would actually display content, and that users would have to fill it with - in order to remove that content. From an editorial perspective in the specific case of this Outer Wilds infobox, it also doesn’t make sense that a 1) random, 2) outdated, 3) optional (vs the logo) image that doesn’t represent the artwork itself should appear by default instead of being toggled off.
And this issue goes beyond this single article from fr:wiki. WP articles that work fine on their own can be suddenly disfigured without any hint in the WP history to let WP users know how the change came to be (see for example the Witcher 3, an article that I brought to Feature Article level with only one image in the infobox, and that is now plagued with two -- had this additional image been added through WP, it would have been understandably reverted). The consensus in the worldwide chapters of WP that do not work with fair use law (i.e. most languages except for en:wiki) is that infoboxes for artworks (be it video games, films, books, etc.) can only legally get away with displaying by default the logotype. For any additional pictures, common sense should be that they are made optional, not activated by default, otherwise it would become unmanageable if anyone could choose to add an image on WD and thus an endless stream of pictures would get piled up on top of each other on WP. Were the different worldwide video game WikiProjects, which I assume are the biggest clients of the video game infobox template, consulted about the changes brought to it?

Many thanks to @Dexxor: for correcting the mistake that did exist in the infobox and that forced the image to be visible by default everywhere. Glad this could be clarified. --Alecto Chardon (talk) 17:55, 24 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
