Frysk edit

This is the native "West Frisian" name for the language. In English it's called "West", as is done in several other languages, to indicate it's not East Frisian nor North Frisian. In Fryslân and in The Netherlands in general, however, "West-Friesland"/ "West-Fryslân" refers to the area of Holland, which was indeed "West Frisa" until the Zuyderzee became so prominent that the Frisians could no longer defend that area and it was conquered by Holland. In Fryslân, the distinction for the local language is therefore "Westerlauwersk Frysk" (Thus Frisian from west of the river the Lauwers, thus west of the province of Groningen.)

Generally, no other language calls it "Frysk"; if someone does claim to, documentation should include exactly the purpose of the relevant field. Aliter (talk) 22:22, 9 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
