Welcome to Wikidata, ANU Outreachy!

Wikidata is a free knowledge base that you can edit! It can be read and edited by humans and machines alike and you can go to any item page now and add to this ever-growing database!

Need some help getting started? Here are some pages you can familiarize yourself with:

  • Introduction – An introduction to the project.
  • Wikidata tours – Interactive tutorials to show you how Wikidata works.
  • Community portal – The portal for community members.
  • User options – including the 'Babel' extension, to set your language preferences.
  • Contents – The main help page for editing and using the site.
  • Project chat – Discussions about the project.
  • Tools – A collection of user-developed tools to allow for easier completion of some tasks.

Please remember to sign your messages on talk pages by typing four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask on Project chat. If you want to try out editing, you can use the sandbox to try. Once again, welcome, and I hope you quickly feel comfortable here, and become an active editor for Wikidata.

Best regards! --Hjart (talk) 18:30, 19 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

I've reverted several of your edits today, such as the one on Anaconda (Q483539). Please make sure that the wikidata items you find actually match the enwiki articles you're trying to link. --Hjart (talk) 18:30, 19 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Hjart:Sorry for the wrong edits, I'll be more careful moving forward. --ANU Outreachy (talk) 21:22, 19 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
You may not have been aware that wikidata labels are not necessarily unique. There are several wikidata items labeled "Anaconda" and several other items labeled "black magic", so it often takes some effort to find the right wikidata item, if there is one at all. In this process, sometimes it's usefull to look at what other language articles uses an image in the english article. It can also be useful to scan an area for existing items with coordinate location (P625) (I use JOSM (Q12877)) for this. --Hjart (talk) 08:35, 20 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
I just noticed your response to Mike Peel. I often manually link new articles from Danish wikipedia and in my experience, even for humans this is often a tricky task, whick can require following a number of different approaches as well as carefully considering whether the items actually match. I commend you on trying to do it automatically, but for now I strongly recommend that you manually check each one of the matches your code finds before actually creating the new links.--Hjart (talk) 15:58, 20 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
I try to automate the processes but since the data varies it doesnt work for all. Thank you for your advice , I'll stick to manual checking.--ANU Outreachy (talk) 17:17, 21 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Outreachy edit

Hi. I’m sending this to all applicants of the 'Synchronising Wikidata and Wikipedias using pywikibot’ Outreachy project (phab:T276329). Thanks for all your contributions so far! You can continue sending contributions until the Outreachy deadline. If you haven’t already, please submit your contributions to Outreachy, and you might want to start writing your application if you haven’t already (the deadline is next week!) You can do so here. Also, the project has had a lot of interest, and there is only one place available, so I strongly encourage you to also submit contributions and applications to other Outreachy projects as well to increase your chances of doing an Outreachy internship! (Again, I’m saying this to all applicants.) Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 09:35, 21 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

I'll keep your advice in mind and begin working on the proposal now, thanks!--ANU Outreachy (talk) 17:19, 21 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi, thanks for applying for my project on Outreachy. I’m sorry that you weren’t selected - there were so many good candidates and the final decision was very tough! I hope you’ve learnt a lot during the contribution stage of the project! I also hope that you’ll think about continuing to contribute to Wikipedia and Wikidata, there’s a lot that can be done both manually and using pywikibot! In particular, see Wikipedia:Bot requests here on Wikidata, and also on a lot of different language Wikipedias - some of whom are really in need of bot editors! If you are interested, feel free to ask me for help as you need! Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 12:07, 19 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Experiments edit

When you do experiments, please note the Wikidata:Sandbox. --Hjart (talk) 05:13, 28 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

When the changes are specific to the page I tend to use code and then revert them myself. Is that okay? --ANU Outreachy (talk) 09:10, 28 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

I and others are following the latest changes looking for mistakes, vandalism etc. When you're doing experiments, please use the sandbox. --Hjart (talk) 09:28, 28 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Okay ,thank you.--ANU Outreachy (talk) 09:44, 28 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Call for participation in the interview study with Wikidata editors edit

Dear ANU Outreachy,

I hope you are doing good,

I am Kholoud, a researcher at King’s College London, and I work on a project as part of my PhD research that develops a personalized recommendation system to suggest Wikidata items for the editors based on their interests and preferences. I am collaborating on this project with Elena Simperl and Miaojing Shi.

I would love to talk with you to know about your current ways to choose the items you work on in Wikidata and understand the factors that might influence such a decision. Your cooperation will give us valuable insights into building a recommender system that can help improve your editing experience.

Participation is completely voluntary. You have the option to withdraw at any time. Your data will be processed under the terms of UK data protection law (including the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018). The information and data that you provide will remain confidential; it will only be stored on the password-protected computer of the researchers. We will use the results anonymized (?) to provide insights into the practices of the editors in item selection processes for editing and publish the results of the study to a research venue. If you decide to take part, we will ask you to sign a consent form, and you will be given a copy of this consent form to keep.

If you’re interested in participating and have 15-20 minutes to chat (I promise to keep the time!), please either contact me at kholoudsaa@gmail.com or use this form https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdmmFHaiB20nK14wrQJgfrA18PtmdagyeRib3xGtvzkdn3Lgw/viewform?usp=sf_link with your choice of the times that work for you.

I’ll follow up with you to figure out what method is the best way for us to connect.

Please contact me using the email mentioned above if you have any questions or require more information about this project.

Thank you for considering taking part in this research.

Regards

Kholoud
